Man City Back In Final After 2021 Defeat

After passing Arsenal at the top of the English Premier League table and claiming their third straight EPL title on the penultimate week of the season, Man City checked off the first box on their way to a potential treble-winning season.

They were 28-5-5 in the league and finished with 89 points, five above of Arsenal with 84. Erling Haaland led all Premier League scorers with 36 goals which broke an EPL record. Phil Foden (11) and Julian Alvarez (9) were next for City.

Just as the dust was settling on their EPL glory and prior to this weekend’s top clash, there was also the matter of the FA Cup Final versus Manchester United last Saturday. Man City checked the second box toward the treble winning 2-1, backed by two goals from İlkay Gündoğan.

Man City topped Group C during the Group Stage at 4-2-0 playing Dortmund, Sevilla and Copenhagen. From there they’d go on to defeat Leipzig (8-1 on aggregate) in the Round of 16, Bayern Munich (4-1) in the Quarterfinals and Real Madrid (4-1) in the semifinals.

Real Madrid came up short in their quest to knock off three English sides on their way to the final after taking out Chelsea and Liverpool, before falling to Manchester City. It was 1-1 in the first leg in Spain with the tie still anyone’s game heading back to England for leg 2.

City came out with a smothering attack in the first half in their second leg match with Madrid and Bernardo Silva had the Cityzens ahead 2-0 inside of 37 minutes. It would stay that way until an Eder Militao own goal off a Kevin de Bruyne free kick in the 76′, before Alvarez added salt to the wound with City’s fourth goal in stoppage time.

After being knocked out by Madrid in last year’s semifinals, Pep Guardiola is back in the final for the second time in three years.

In the 2021 final they lost 1-0 to Chelsea. City have been knocking on the door of Champions League glory for years reaching the quarterfinals in each of the three seasons prior to 2020/21 and the Round of 16 three times and semifinals again from 2013/14 – 2016/17.

Inter Milan Seeks First Champions League Title Since 2010

Inter started off their Serie A campaign with four defeats in their opening eight games but turned things around with only three losses in their 17. A five game winless run from March 10 – April 15 put their top four aspirations in question, but they finished the season at 7-0-1.

Lautaro Martinez was second in league scoring with 21 goals and six assists, followed by Romelu Lukaku with 10 goals and six assists. Eden Dzeko was Inter’s third-leading scorer with nine goals and three assists.

That placed them third in the Serie A table at 23-3-12.

If you include all competitions though, they finished 11-1-1 heading into the Champions League Fina;.

Those results include a 2-1 Coppa Italia Final win over Fiorentina.

Outside of two Group Stage defeats to Bayern Munich, Inter has had an impeccable Champions League campaign. Those are their only two defeats over 12 matches and those are two of the only four matches where they have conceded a goal. The others being a 3-3 Group Stage Stage draw with Barcelona and 3-3 Quarterfinals draw with Benfica. Otherwise, Inter have kept eight clean sheets overall and have scored nine versus only three goals conceded during the knockout rounds.

In the semifinals against rivals AC Milan, Inter essentially did enough in the opening 11 minutes to wrap up the tie with two quick goals from Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on their way to a a 2-0 victory. That put them in an excellent position in leg 2 that saw the teams scoreless until the 74′ minute when Martinez sealed Milan’s fate and advanced Inter to the Champions League Final 3-0 on aggregate.

Manchester City vs Inter Milan History

There’s little history between these sides and even less recent history between Man City and Inter Milan.

59.8% Average Possession 46.4%

Inter’s 46.4% average possession ranks 24th amongst teams competing in the tournament this season. Only Barcelona with 62.5% average more than Man City.

It would be expected that as you progress throughout a competition and play more games that you’ll naturally allow more attempts on goal during that time. For Inter, they’ve given up the second-most attempts and third-most shots on targets.

However, Man City have still kept those chances against to a minimum. They’ve only given up the 13th-most attempts and 19th-most shots on target despite being involved in the most games.

Champions League Goalscorer Odds

Diving into some Man City vs Inter Milan props, here are the players to consider for scoring props in your Champions League picks.

Man City Goalscorer Odds

If you’re looking for a goalscorer bet in your Man City vs Inter Milan props, the obvious choice would be Haaland. The Norwegian leads the competition in goals (12), shots (38) and shots on target (24). He’s the anytime goalscorer favorite at -190 odds, followed by Alvarez at +150.

There’s a big drop off from there with the next Man City players on the scoring list all have just three goals. Those being Alvarez, Riyad Mahrez and Silva. Kevin de Bruyne has scored twice and seven more players have each scored once.

Inter Milan Goalscorer Odds

Dzeko leads Inter with four goals on 23 shots and 11 on target during the Champions League. The scoring then spreads out between Martinez and Lukaku (3 each), Mkhitaryan (2) and four more players with one goal each. Martinez has the shortest odds of any Inter player to score anytime at +280.

Manchester City vs Inter Milan Picks

After years of knocking on the door, it really does look like it’s Man City’s year. Despite Inter’s success in recent months no one would question that City are the top team in the world right now. If you’re betting Inter, you simply are going for the better odds in a final, where games are often more cagey.

Inter had 12 losses this season. That was the joint-most defeats among the top seven sides in Serie A. Looking at their results against fellow top seven teams, they were just 6-0-6 (WDL). Inter’s 71 goals were the second-most in Serie A, but, their 42 goals conceded was the third-most among the top five. It was also more than three other teams between 5th and 10th in the table.

There will be a big advantage in midfield for Man City. Inter have good but not amazing midfielders. It’s possible Inzaghi drops one of his strikers into midfield instead of going with his standard 3-5-2 with two strikers up top. The two striker system has worked for Inter and switching away from it may take some adaptation.

I like City to win in my Champions League picks. Unfortunately you just can’t extract any value for betting on that without getting creative.

I’m going for a Champions League same-game parlay for my Man City vs Inter Milan picks.

For this Champions League SGP I’m taking a City win in regulation time and over 2.5 goals in the match. This means Man City can win 3-0, 2-1, 4-0, 4-2, etc or any combo that sees them winning in regulation and at least three goals being scored between the teams.

Champions League Final Picks: Man City to win in regulation and over 2.5 match goals (+110)
