Ligue 1 Title is Already PSG’s

Marseille may have booked themselves a place in the next round of the Europa Conference League with a solid two-legged win over Qarag of Baku ten days ago but was made to pay the price for that long journey home when they failed to see off Troyes last weekend. As a result, they fell to 15 points behind PSG with 12 to play – a lead that the Parisians are simply not going to lose. It has been a valiant effort from the men from the South of France to even make it a title race but their race was effectively run once they dropped five points from the last six on offer. Their fight now is to stay in second and secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

A Reset Needed for Marseille

One win in their last five at the Velodrome suggests that Les Olympiens are happier playing away from home right now and there is also the fact have the first-leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie with Basel on Thursday to consider when Sampaoli picks his squad.

Monaco comes into this game off the back of a huge disappointment after losing on Wednesday to Nantes on penalties in the semifinal of the Coupe de France. The Nantes defeat came three days after the Monégasques had lost 2-1 at home to Reims in Ligue 1 – a result that meant they have not managed a win in their last four games across all competitions. Their hopes of playing in Europe next season are going to disappear fast unless they can arrest this untimely slide.

Big Test for the Monégasques

As a result of this poor run, Clement’s team is down in ninth but are still only five points adrift of fifth place which brings with it a place in the Europa Conference League side, so all is not lost. They do however have to find a way to win on the road where they have not won in four and have won just once in their last eight games.
