Renegades Coming Off Ugly Performance vs Houston

Dallas failed to recover after spotting the Houston Roughnecks an early 15-0 lead on their way to a 27-20 loss that dumps the squad’s straight up record to 2-2 on the season going into Saturday afternoon’s Guardians vs Renegades matchup at Globe Life Park. With last week’s defeat, the Renegades also remain the lone XFL squad to fail to pick up a home victory through the first four weeks of the league’s inaugural campaign.

The Renegades’ struggles on home turf have been disastrous for loyal sports bettors. Dallas was pegged as lofty 9-point home chalk ahead of their 15-9 loss to the St. Louis BattleHawks in Week 1 and proved equally disappointing in last week’s loss to the Roughnecks as a diminished 1-point underdog.

Injury to Jones Deepens Crisis Under Center

Turnovers have proven to be a massive problem for the Renegades. Quarterback Landry Jones put the team in a hole early by tossing interceptions on three straight possessions in the first half, which Houston quickly converted into their 15-0 lead. Jones’ accuracy issues have become a growing problem, with the pivot tossing seven picks against just five touchdowns over the past three weeks.

However, the former Pittsburgh Steelers passer is now sidelined for at least two weeks after aggravating a knee injury in last week’s loss, setting the stage for Philip Nelson to return under center this weekend. Nelson produced mixed results in his lone appearance of the season back in Week 1, completing 33 of 42 passes for 218 yards, but failed to find the end zone despite driving the offense into the BattleHawks red zone on two occasions.

Those uneven performances have left Dallas sporting the second-most passing yards in the XFL, but lagging well behind the leaders with just 19.5 points scored per game overall, and only 14.5 points per game on home turf in the XFL team stats. The one benefit that the Renegades have provided to sports bettors has been consistency in totals betting, with the “Under” going 4-0 through their first four outings. However, with the offensively-challenged Guardians coming to town, the total in Saturday’s contest sits at a shallow 37.0.

Guardians Offense Firing Blanks

It has been a difficult first month of existence for the Guardians, who closely followed Dallas as strong +400 second favorites on the opening XFL championship odds. New York opened the season with a decisive 23-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers at MetLife Stadium, but have failed to come close to that level of offensive production since, scoring just 26 total points over their past three outings.

The Guardians managed to hang on to claim a narrow 17-14 win over the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats last weekend, earning the outright victory as 7-point underdogs and improving to 2-2 ATS on the season. However, the team has struggled badly on the road, scoring just nine total points in losses to the BattleHawks and DC Defenders, dumping the Guardians to a distant +1000 bet in the XFL championship odds.

New York’s Passing Game Worst in the XFL

Like the Renegades, the Guardians have been plagued by dismal performances under center. Four different quarterbacks have seen action for New York so far this season, but have combined to rack up an XFL-worst 142.8 passing yards per game, and just three total scoring passes.

Things have been no better on the other side of the ball, with the Guardians defense surrendering a league-worst 236.8 passing yards per game. Surprisingly, New York ranks second, just behind St. Louis, with just eight touchdowns allowed this season.

This has the makings of yet another low-scoring contest, adding appeal to the “Under” as a -115 bet. And although the Guardians have played feeble football on the road, serious doubts exist as to whether the Renegades can score enough points to cover a wide 7.5-point spread.

Picks: New York Guardians +7.5 (-110); Under 37.0 (-110)
