  • The Phillies and Rays continue their three game series on Wednesday, July 5th
  • Following Tuesday’s loss, the Rays have lost three in a row for just the second time this season
  • Check out the latest Phillies vs Rays odds, picks and player props to target below

While they still own the best record in the American League and are big favorites in the MLB division odds, the Rays (57-31, 34-11 home) are no longer the best team in baseball, as Atlanta has surpassed them in winning percentage.

Following a 3-1 loss to the Phillies (45-39, 23-23 away) on Independence Day, the Rays have lost three straight for just the second time this season and will be dialed in to avoid four defeats in a row for the first time this campaign.

Opening pitch on for the next battle between the Phillies and Rays goes at 6:40 pm ET on Wednesday, July 5th with NBC Sports Philadelphia and Bally Sports Network providing coverage for your viewing pleasure. You can see the Phillies vs Rays odds below, while we also offer up our best bets and prediction.

Philadelphia Phillies -105 -1.5 (+160) O 8 (-105)
Tampa Bay Rays -115 +1.5 (-190) U 8 (-115)

There’s no clear favorite in the MLB odds between the Phillies and Rays on Wednesday, although the home side are slight chalk at -115 on the moneyline compared to -105 for the visitors. It’s super close for a reason, as we detail below, Philly have been road warriors lately.

Philadelphia vs Tampa Bay Probable Pitchers

About a month ago, the Phillies were sitting at World Series odds of +3000, but they’ve posted a 20-9 mark since the start of June and now sit solidly amongst the top 10 contenders.

Most impressive last month from the arms in the rotation was Taijuan Walker. In his last five outings, the sizeable righthander allowed only three earned runs in 32 innings of work. Only three National League starters have more wins than the nine that Walker has posted this season.

Philly has proven to be a solid bet in the MLB odds when the 30-year old takes to the hill, capturing victories in seven of his last eight appearances.

Walker vs Littell Stats

Taijuan Walker
VS
Zack Littell
9-3 Record 0-1
3.93 ERA 4.38
1.23 WHIP 1.30
.232 OBA .280
2.3 SO/W Ratio 7.0

Part of the reason for Tampa’s scuffling play of late has been due to injuries. While the return of Brandon Lowe should bring a boost to their MLB starting lineups, righthander and Cy Young odds favorite, Shane McClanahan just went on the 15-day injured list with back tightness.

Manager Kevin Cash has had to piece together the rotation. On Wednesday, Zack Littell will serve as the opener for the Rays with Yonny Chirinos expected to get the bulk of the work. Littell has pitched less than three innings in every appearance he’s made this campaign.

Now, more than ever, they’ll need solid performances from the pitching staff, including Chirinos. The man with the nasty slider has pitched in 12 games this season, but started just four.

In his last outing, he delivered his best start of the year, going six innings while allowing just one run in a victory over the Diamondbacks. With Tampa having lost nine of their last 15, they could use more of the same from the Venezuelan native as they look to snap their skid against Philly.

Philadelphia vs Tampa Bay Player-Prop Picks

Owning a batting average below the Mendoza Line, Kyle Schwarber can’t brag about much, but he has been terrific on the road lately. The slugger has at least a hit in 10 of his last 11 games away from home to go along with four homers in those contests. With 22 bombs on the season, he’s worth a gamble to go deep against the Rays.

Although Tampa owns one of the best offenses in the league, we also suggest you target Walker to deliver another splendid performance. He hasn’t allowed more than a single earned run in each of his last five starts, so pick him to allow under 2.5 runs in his first start of July.

Philadelphia vs Tampa Bay Predictions

Playing away from home has been a boon to the Phillies of late, as they are riding a 10-game winning streak outside the City of Brotherly Love. That includes a 4-0 mark against division leaders, Arizona and Tampa.

On top of that, they’ve been extremely successful with Walker on the mound of late. On the other hand, it’s hard to count on a combination of Littell and Chirinos and with the Rays skidding lately, we like the Phillies to hang another L on the home side.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline  (-105)
