Booker Steps Up as a Playmaker

The Suns were handed some unfortunate news during the All-Star break as Chris Paul is expected to miss up to two months with a thumb injury. Phoenix is currently in first place in the West and without CP3 dishing dimes, others are going to have to step up and facilitate. Enter Devin Booker.

Book has been fantastic this season, averaging 25.5 points, 5.2 boards, and 4.5 assists per game. While he’s usually able to thrive mostly as a scorer when Paul is alongside him in the backcourt, that won’t be the case now. Cam Payne is still out due to injury, another respectable passer, and frankly, the Suns have to make up for a league-leading 10.7 assists per night that CP3 generates. Booker must take the bull by the horns and be a playmaker.

Also, in his last game before the break, Book collected eight dimes. It may feel a bit risky to take the over here, but the 25-year-old has simply no choice but to do more now. That will include picking apart the Thunder defense on Thursday.

  • Pick: Devin Booker Over 7.5 Assists (+118)

DeRozan Stays Hot

It’s no secret that DeMar DeRozan has been one of the biggest reasons the Chicago Bulls are in the mix for an Eastern Conference title at the moment and have been rising up the NBA odds. The veteran is playing at an MVP level and before the All-Star break, he set a new NBA record after scoring 35+ points and shooting at least 50% from the field in seven-straight games, surpassing the great Wilt Chamberlain. In a nutshell, DeRozan is on fire.

While one could argue that he might not come back with the same firepower after a week off, the 32-year-old is showing up every single night. He’s hit the over in points in 14 of his last 16 games. Just comprehend it. The consistency DeRozan brings to the table is absolutely phenomenal.

The Hawks meanwhile are 28th in the Association in defensive rating and DeMar already torched them for 35 earlier in the campaign. They won’t be able to stop his lethal mid-range game.

  • Pick: DeMar DeRozan Over 28.5 Points (-110)
