Miami Looks for Elite Eight Return

Miami is attempting to return to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row.

Junior guard Isaiah Wong, the ACC Player of the Year, had a big performance in the win over Indiana. He finished with 27 points and eight rebounds in helping the Hurricanes outrebound the Hoosiers 48-31.

Wong notched his 11th game of the season with at least 20 points. He has averages of 16.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game.

Senior guard Jordan Miller finished with 19 points and sophomore guard Nijel Pack contributed 12 points.

Miller is scoring 15.1 points and pulling down 6.2 rebounds a game. Pack has a 13.4 scoring average.

Sophomore forward Norchad Omier is a force inside, averaging 13.4 points and 10.1 rebounds. He is third in the ACC in rebounding and his 58.0 field goal percentage ranks second.

Miami is 16th in the country in free-throw shooting (77.4%), 18th in field goal percentage (48.1), 25th in scoring (79.1) and 47th in three-point shooting (36.8%).

Mark on Mark for Houston

Houston rallied from a 41-31 halftime deficit to beat Auburn by 17 points on Sunday.

Sophomore guard Tramon Mark scored a career-high 26 points and just missed a double-double as he pulled down nine rebounds. It was just his third game of the season with at least 20 points as he raised his scoring average to 10.0.

Houston outrebounded Auburn 45-34 while holding the Tigers to 37.7% (20 of 53) shooting. The Cougars also blocked 12 shots with freshman forward Jarace Wallace having six of the rejections and junior forward J’Wuan Roberts finishing with five.

Mark is one of five Houston players scoring in double figures along with senior guard Marcus Sasser (16.9), Walker (11.1), junior guard Jamal Shead (10.4) and Roberts (10.3).

Sasser’s Wooden Award odds are +10000.

Roberts is fifth in the American Athletic Conference in both rebounds (7.9) and blocked shots (1.4). Shead is third in assists (5.4).

Sasser is averaging 3.1 points and 1.6 steals while Walker is averaging 6.7 rebounds and Shead is making 1.8 steals a game.

Against Auburn, Sasser had 22 points and shot 5 of 9 from three-point range after leaving Houston’s previous game, a first-round win over Northern Kentucky, with a groin injury. It was the All-American’s thirteenth 20-plus-point game of 2022-23.

Shead chipped in with 10 points and five assists.

Houston has played lockdown defense all season. The Cougars are first nationally in field goal percentage allowed (36.1), second in points given up (56.6) and second in three-point defense (27.4%).

Miami vs Houston Prediction

Houston has won five straight games in the series but that is ancient history as the teams haven’t played since the 1970-71 season. The Cougars are likely to beat the Hurricanes again, but it won’t be easy.

Pick: Miami +7.5 (-120)

Season record: 33-32 (-2.2 units) ATS, 4-10 (-5.5 units) ML
