Prop #1: JuJu Smith-Schuster Receptions

JuJu Smith-Schuster signed with the Chiefs in the offseason as a free agent after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran wide receiver and Mahomes seem to be developing chemistry quite quickly.

Mahomes, who is a +500 favorite in the NFL MVP odds, targeted Smith-Schuster eight times last week. That was the second-most among the Chiefs behind tight end Travis Kelce’s nine.

Smith-Schuster caught six of those passes for 79 yards.

Last season, Smith-Schuster had just 15 catches in five games because of injury. However, in 2020, he had 97 receptions on 111 targets for the Steelers and had a 111-catch season in 2018.

Thus, Smith-Schuster is capable of being a high-volume receiver. He looks like a good bet against the Chargers, who allowed the Raiders’ Davante Adams to have 10 receptions for 141 yards and a TD last week

  • Pick: JuJu Smith-Schuster Over 5.5 Receptions (+100); 1 unit

Prop #2: Kelce Is Mr Reliable

Chiefs seven-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce shows no signs of slowing down at age 32. He was again a big part of the offense in Week 1.

Kelce led the Chiefs with eight receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. It marked the 30th 100-yard game of his career. Just two tight ends in NFL history have more, Rob Gronkowski (32) and Tony Gonzalez (31).

Furthermore, Kelce has caught a pass in 128 consecutive games. That is three short of the Chiefs’ record set by Gonzalez.

The Chargers held Raiders tight end Darren Waller to four receptions, but he had 79 yards for an average of 19.8 a catch.

Look for Kelce to put up a big yardage number in this matchup in your Chargers vs Chiefs picks.

  • Pick: Travis Kelce Over 78.5 Receiving Yards (-115); 1 unit

Chargers vs Chiefs Touchdown Scorer Odds

Player Odds to Score 1st TD Odds to Score Any TD
Austin Ekeler (LAC) +410 -180
Travis Kelce (KC) +460 -160
JuJu Smith-Schuster (KC) +650 +126
Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC) +675 +145
Mike Williams (LAC) +700 +123
Mecole Hardman (KC) +950 +175
Marquez Valdes-Scantling (KC) +950 +170
Gerald Everett (LAC) +1000 +185
Joshua Palmer (LAC) +1000 +180
Jerick McKinnon (KC) +1500 +320

Both Ekeler and Kelce are listed as odds-on favorites to be anytime touchdown scorers in the odds above.

While Smith-Schuster has quickly become a favorite target of Mahomes, Kelce remains the Chiefs’ money receiver.

Kelce had a touchdown catch of 9 yards to open the scoring last week. He also had a combined 20 scoring receptions in 2020 and 2021. Look for Mahomes to establish Kelce early again.

The Chargers will be a bit limited in the passing game with wide receiver Keenan Allen sidelined with a hamstring injury for a second straight week. Thus, look for running back Ekeler to, as usual, get plenty of touches.

Ekeler has scored in three straight games against the Chiefs so should be considered in your Chargers vs Chiefs props for touchdown scores.

  • Travis Kelce first touchdown scorer (+460); 1 unit
  • Austin Ekeler anytime touchdown scorer (-180); 1 unit
