  • The Buffalo Bills are +600 favorites to be the highest-scoring NFL team during the 2022-23 season
  • No team has repeated as the highest-scoring team over the past five seasons
  • The Houston Texans are the +500 chalk to reign as the NFL’s lowest-scoring team

When it comes to being the highest scoring team in the NFL, getting to the top is much easier than staying on the summit. Over the past five seasons, five different teams have reigned as the league’s most potent offense.

Oddsmakers see a change in order again for the 2022-23 season. It’s the Buffalo Bills who are being given favorite’s status to put up the most points, with a betting line of +600.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who led the league in scoring as recently as 2018 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, #2 last season with 511 points, are the co-second betting choices at +800.

The NFL regular season officially kicks off on September 8 with the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams playings host to the Bills.

At a betting line of +600, the Bills are being given an implied probability of 14.29% to be the NFL’s highest scoring team. Bet $10 on Buffalo and a winning wager will deliver a payout of $70.

Bills Have Been Putting Up the Points

While Buffalo hasn’t led the NFL in scoring recently, they’ve been coming close. Last season, the Bills put up 483 points, which was good for third in the league. The Bills averaged 28.4 points per game. In the 2020-21 campaign, Buffalo’s 501 points left the team second overall in the NFL scoring race.

Certainly, the weapons Buffalo has in place can prove devastating to an opposing defense. Quarterback Josh Allen is an MVP candidate. He passed for 36 touchdowns and 4,407 yards. A double threat with the football, Allen also rushed for 763 yards and six TDs. His 6.3 yards per carry led the NFL.

Over the past two seasons, receiver Stefon Diggs has caught 230 passes for 2,760 yards and 18 TDs. Five other Bills went for at least 500 yards in receptions in 2021-22. The Bills were sixth in the NFL in rushing last season. They gained 129.9 yards per game on the ground.

It’s entirely possible Buffalo’s offense will be even more explosive this season. Offseason additions include tight end OJ Howard via free agency and running back James Cook through the draft.

NFL Highest Scoring Teams Can Rise Up Suddenly

As much as Buffalo’s output over the past two seasons is impressive, the fact of the matter is it may not matter when it comes to determining the highest scoring squad. Here’s something to consider when devising NFL betting strategies – over the past five seasons, only one of the top-scoring teams in the league finished among the top-10 scoring offenses during the previous season.

The Dallas Cowboys, last season’s leader, were 16th in scoring in 2020-21. Green Bay, the 2020-21 leader, ended up 15th in 2019-20. Baltimore led that season. The Ravens were 13th in scoring in 2018-19. Only the Chiefs, the 2017-18 leader with 565 points, were in the neighborhood of the top during the prior campaign. The Chiefs were sixth in scoring in 2016-17.

The Rams were the leaders that season, scoring 478 points and making an amazing transition. During the 2015-16 campaign, LA was last in the 32-team NFL with 224 points.

Do Broncos Offer Value?

Looking at those numbers, might the Denver Broncos be a sleeper worth considering at +1200? Denver finished tied for 23rd with 335 points last season.

The popular theory surrounding Denver is that the Broncos were an elite QB away from being a Super Bowl contender. That problem was solved in the spring when the team acquired Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson from Seattle.

Denver is listed at -170 to make it in the NFL playoff odds.

In 2013, the second season after Denver acquired Super Bowl-winning QB Peyton Manning from Indianapolis, the Broncos set an NFL record, scoring 606 points.

Those Bills Will Pay

Looking at all the data, while history might not suggest Buffalo is the answer, reality is telling a different story.

The Bills are a team loaded with weapons, a young squad that’s been maturing together. Buffalo is assigned 11.5 in the NFL win totals and odds of -150 to go over that number.

They should also be breaking the plane of the other team’s goal line more than any NFL team this season.

Pick: Buffalo Bills (+600)

These Jets Won’t Fly

No NFL team has managed to score fewer than 300 points in each of the past three seasons. One club came close, though. That would be the New York Jets.

In 2019-20, the Jets accumulated 276 points. The following season, they accounted for an NFL-low 243 points. Finally, last season, the Jets scored just 310 points.

When it comes time to take bets on the NFL’s lowest-scoring team, the Jets are always worthy of consideration.

The Bears Will Wear It

New York’s other NFL team, the Giants, are always solid candidates to go low when it comes to scoring. Life after Russell Wilson could be ugly for the Seattle Seahawks. And the Houston Texans are worthy choices as the +500 chalk to be the lowest scoring team.

But it says here that they all will rise above the Chicago Bears. In eight of 17 games last season, Chicago didn’t get to 20 points. On three of those occasions, the Bears didn’t make it to double digits.

Chicago QBs finished 34th in the NFL in TD passes (7), 33rd in QBR (26.4) and 28th in passer rating 73.2.

Pick: Chicago Bears (+700)
