Watch out NHL, the New York Rangers are officially serving notice. After taking a bit of time to hit their stride following some huge trade acquisitions, the Rangers have won four in a row and blitzed the Penguins and Predators by 6-0 and 7-0 score lines in their last two outings.
On Tuesday, March 21st, they’ll go up against a Hurricanes squad they ousted from last year’s postseason in seven games and are 2-0 against this year. Puck drop for this affair is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET in a game that will be broadcast on Bally Sports South and MSG. This is the first of two straight games between these two sides.
Both these teams are amongst the top 5 in shortest Stanley Cup odds and are on a collision course for a 2nd round matchup in the NHL playoff bracket if each side handles their business in the 1st round. Check out the Hurricanes vs Rangers odds below, plus our best bet and pick.
Hurricanes vs Rangers Odds
Game Time | Team | Puck Line | Total | Moneyline |
---|---|---|---|---|
Tuesday, March 21st | Carolina Hurricanes | +1.5 (-250) | O 6 (-106) | -105 |
7:00 PM | New York Rangers | -1.5 (+205) | U 6 (-115) | -117 |
Even with the Blueshirts’ formidable run of play, the Rangers are only slight -117 moneyline favorites to defeat the Canes for a 3rd straight time this year, a feat no other squad in the league has accomplished so far.
Another win here by the Rangers would give them a huge mental advantage over Carolina as they’ll meet for a 4th and final time this campaign two nights later.
Considering each side is known for their stout defensive play and are both top 10 in goals against per game, they have surprisingly combined for eight goals in each head-to-head game this year.

Massive Injuries Hurting Hurricanes Offense
Carolina must feel as if something is against them. Big off-season acquisition Max Pacioretty was only able to suit up in five games this year after tearing his Achilles again and even more devastating to the team, was the news they got last week that Andrei Svechnikov is also done for the year with an ACL injury.
Forward Andrei Svechnikov will undergo knee surgery on Thursday. He will miss the remainder of the season and playoffs. https://t.co/PZfcznWIuw

Sebastian Aho picked up the scoring slack in their last contest, notching a hat trick in a 5-4 overtime victory over Philadelphia. However, in their last six, goals have been really hard to come by as Carolina has found the back of the net just 13 times while being shut out twice.
Compared to last year’s squad, the Hurricanes now look pretty thin up front. Aho and Martin Necas are now the Hurricanes’ only forwards scoring at an 82-game pace of even 50 points this season.
Rangers Sending Message in the East
First, the Rangers struck in the trade market, adding six-time 30-goal scorer Vladimir Tarasenko and former Hart Trophy winner Patrick Kane to their group. Now, they’re showing their mettle on the ice. They own arguably the best four lines top-to-bottom in the NHL, which is in stark contrast to the banged-up Carolina bunch they’ll be facing.

The Rangers started off slowly after finalizing those two transactions, with a 2-2-1 record. However, they’ve gone on to win their last four since, the last two in what can only be described as devastating fashion against two competent opponents in Pittsburgh and Nashville. Those two victories on the weekend came by a combined 13-0 count.
Mika Zibanejad is having a career year with 37 goals and 77 points. He’s got multiple points during each of the four games of this winning streak and should probably be getting some love in the Hart Trophy odds, although we all know who is going to win that award.

While he’s not quite the MVP candidate he was last year, Igor Shesterkin has made sure voters don’t totally forget about him in the Vezina trophy odds. He’s 7th in the league in goals against average amongst netminders with at least 30 games played this year and coming off a 33-save shutout.
Hurricanes vs Rangers Pick and Prediction
Since the beginning of February, the Rangers are 8-2-0 at Madison Square Garden, averaging 4.6 goals per game on offense, while giving up just 2.6 per game on defense. Playing their best hockey of the year, it’s a wonder they’re not bigger chalk in the Tuesday NHL odds.
Hurricanes vs Rangers Same-Game Parlay Picks
Pick | Odds |
---|---|
New York Rangers Regular Time Winner | +138 |
Mika Zibanejad Anytime Goal Scorer | +138 |
PARLAY ODDS | +325 |
When you look at Carolina’s record against better competition over the last two months, it doesn’t inspire much confidence. The Canes are 10-1-0 since February started against teams who don’t currently own a playoff spot, versus a 2-5-0 mark facing teams inside the playoff picture.
Zibanejad has tallied in four straight and also scored in both meetings with the Canes this year. While Carolina needs the win more with the Devils on their heels for 1st place in the Metropolitan Division, we can’t see them overcoming a red-hot Rangers squad on Broadway.
Pick: New York Rangers Moneyline (-117)
