Odds as of October 31st at DraftKings.

Bolts Garner First Home Win

Tampa Bay earned its first home win of the season Thursday against Arizona, beating the Coyotes 5-1 at Amalie Arena. The Bolts are typically dominant in their own arena, but it took them four tries to get their first home win this season. Last year, the Lightning started 6-0 at Amalie Arena.

Tampa Bay busted the slump at home against a winless Arizona team, but it was still an inspiring performance. Steven Stamkos netted a power-play goal to end an 0-15 stretch for the Bolts with the man advantage. Alex Killorn scored for the third straight game, while Andrei Vasilevskiy was solid with a 24-save outing.

The Bolts have lost some value in the NHL odds with Nikita Kucherov on IR, but they’re trending in the right direction. After a tough three-game losing streak, Tampa Bay has rallied off two straight victories, outscoring their opponents 10-2 in the process. Stamkos leads the team with 12 points through eight games.

Caps Are Undefeated in Regulation

The Washington Capitals enter Thursday’s matchup with Tampa Bay having not lost a game in regulation. The Caps’ last game was also against Arizona, in which they beat the Coyotes 2-0. It wasn’t as convincing as Tampa Bay’s win, as the Capitals only scored one goal on Arizona netminder Karel Vejmelka.

While their last game wasn’t all that impressive, the Capitals start to the 2021-22 NHL season certainly has been. The Capitals rank top-10 in the NHL In both offense and defense. Alex Ovechkin has started red-hot with nine goals in his first eight games, while Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek both own save percentages above .900

The thing that would bolster the Capitals even more would be the return of top-line center Nicklas Backstrom (hip). He reportedly practised with the team Thursday, but is ineligible to return on this road trip. Luckily, Evgeny Kuznetsov (5G, 7A) is enjoying a bounce-back season and helping Washington replace that lost production.

Capitals vs Lightning Pick & Prediction

Washington and Tampa Bay both boast potent offenses, yet the “under” has cashed in three straight meetings. Taking a look at the head-to-head results for Washington vs Tampa Bay, we can see that these teams have played some close games recently. Tampa Bay won 2-1 on Oct. 16, but the Caps outshot the Bolts 33-24.

The Lightning are typically a great bet at home in the NHL odds, but they’re off to a slow start at Amalie Arena this season. It’ll take more than a win over an 0-9 Arizona team to feel confident backing them as heavy home favorites on the moneyline. The Capitals, meanwhile, are 9-3 in their last 12 road games.

Washington is a good value play against Tampa Bay given their impressive start to the season. It’s hard to bet against Vasilevskiy, but a key stat is the TBL goalie only owns a .903 save percentage in 12 career starts against Washington. Look for another big outing from Ovechkin and Kuznetsov to lead the Caps to victory.

Pick: Washington Capitals Moneyline (+125)
