  • The Penguins have not lost a game in regulation time so far this season
  • We look at the Penguins vs Oilers odds below, plus give you our best bet and prediction

Talk about turning back the clock, Sidney Crosby has gotten off to a quick start to the season as he gets set to play against his heir apparent, Connor McDavid on Monday, October 24th. Puck drop between the Penguins and Oilers is scheduled for 8 pm ET from Rogers Place in Edmonton with Sportsnet carrying the broadcast in Canada.

Even though Edmonton has gotten off to a much slower start than their opponent, the Oilers are still -125 home favorites in the Monday NHL odds. At 2-3-0, it’s a particularly disappointing start for Edmonton considering they’ve played every game at home so far this year.

Let’s look a little deeper into the Penguins vs Oilers odds below and give you our pick and prediction for this contest.

The Oilers are paying +195 to win this game by two goals or more. At -125 on the moneyline, Edmonton has an implied win probability of 55.56% to take this matchup, while the Pens have a 49.02% implied win probability with moneyline odds of +104.

Penguins Road Underdogs Despite Great Start

Tough decisions had to be made by the Penguins brass in the off-season, with longtime veterans Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin both unrestricted free agents. Pittsburgh decided to bring the band back, and so far it’s paying early dividends.

Both of the returnees have had solid starts, but it’s Crosby who is reminding everybody that at 35 years of age, he is nowhere near done yet. With 10 points from five contests, he is amongst the league leaders in points. The Penguins captain is nowhere to be seen in the Hart Trophy odds and may be using that as motivation.

Pittsburgh’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, scoring six times in four of their five games so far. Number one netminder, Tristan Jarry, is off to a perfect start to the season with a 4-0-0 record and 2.01 goals-against average. He is making a case as a longshot consideration in the Vezina Trophy odds.

Edmonton Oilers Betting Outlook

After their best season in the McDavid era, the Oilers can’t be happy with their start so far. The matchup against the Penguins is the end of a six-game homestand to begin the season before embarking on a road trip for the rest of the month.

The dynamic duo of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl can’t be faulted as they are both off to predictable quick starts. They are coming off a 2-0 shutout loss to St. Louis, so expect them to be extra motivated to get some goals. Playing against Crosby and company also will likely provide some added juice to this matchup.

As the heavy odds-on-favorite and most people’s pick in the Art Ross Trophy odds, it will be surprising if McDavid doesn’t find the scoresheet against the Penguins. Last season, he only went pointless in back-to-back games, four times.

Penguins vs Oilers Same-Game Parlay Picks

Pick Odds
Pittsburgh Penguins Puck Line +1.5 -245
Over 6.5 Goals -136
PARLAY ODDS  +145

The Penguins only loss this season came in overtime to the Canadiens. Although the Oilers should be the more desperate team in this one, it’s unlikely we’ll see a blowout and I’d expect a back-and-forth affair that might even go to overtime. Four of the last 10 meetings between these two squads have required OT or a shootout.

At 6.5 goals, the over/under total is set higher than a typical NHL game, but that is because of the abundance of start power you’ll see in the Penguins vs Oilers game. Tight checking didn’t work for the Oilers in their 2-0 loss to the Blues on Saturday, so this contest should be an exciting goal-for-goal battle.

Penguins vs Oilers Pick & Prediction

Both teams are top 10 contenders in the  Stanley Cup odds and with all the superstars playing, you can bet this will be the tastiest out of six games in the Monday NHL odds.

Pittsburgh owned the head-to-head battles between these two sides for a number of years, but the pendulum has swung somewhat, as it’s the Oilers that have taken three of the last four contests against the Pens.

Lately, matchups between these two teams haven’t produced the offense one would expect. However, with the way each team has been scoring to start the season and Edmonton being extra anxious to find the twine after getting shutout in their last game, the prediction here is that the net will be filled in this game.

The best bet in the Penguins vs Oilers odds is to take over 6.5 goals at odds of -136 with Crosby and McDavid putting on a show for everybody watching.

Pick: Over 6.5 Goals (-136)
