  • Senators Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris are currently favored to be the Democratic Party’s choice for Vice President
  • The likely choice will change depending on whether Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders wins the nomination
  • Who is the best bet to end up as the Vice President on the 2020 Democratic ticket?

With the race for the Democratic nominee down to Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, the Vice President discussion (and wagering) has begun.

Biden and Sanders both have their weaknesses as candidates, so their VP pick will be important to reach out to a broader base.

With that in mind, let’s handicap who ends up as the Democratic VP.

2020 Democratic Vice President Odds

Candidate Odds
Amy Klobuchar +150
Kamala Harris +225
Stacey Abrams +600
Michelle Obama +1400
Hillary Clinton +1600
C. Cortez Masto +2000
Tammy Duckworth +2000
Julian Castro +2500
Pete Buttigieg +2500
Beto O’Rourke +3300
Nina Turner +3300
Tammy Baldwin +3300
Cory Booker +3300
Andrew Yang +4000
Sherrod Brown +5000
Tulsi Gabbard +5000

Odds taken March 9th, 2020.

Who Will Win The Presidential Nomination?

The first thing we have to handicap here is who’ll win the party’s nomination to run for president. Although we still have a long way to go – and I still believe we see a contested convention – it’s looking more and more like Joe Biden will win the nomination.

Sanders won’t get help at the convention, so unless Biden implodes, it’s his.

Klobuchar, Harris Favored

The early rumors around the Vice Presidential watercooler have focused on a couple of familiar senators: Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar. That’s why it’s no surprise that those are the two who are at the top of the odds.

Klobuchar gave Biden a huge lift right before Super Tuesday as she – along with Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke – endorsed Biden. Her endorsement was particularly vital as Biden probably won the state of Minnesota as a result. She had previously been expected to carry her home state.

As for Harris, she came out on Sunday to endorse Biden. Her endorsement was a bit weird as she was the one who destroyed Biden at the first democratic debate of the primary season. She roasted him over old bussing programs and segregation, and he wasn’t able to fight back. That knocked him out of the frontrunner status.

Harris would be a good option. As a former prosecutor, she would be very hard on President Donald Trump on the campaign trail. However, Biden already does well with the black vote, so Harris might not gain him new territory.

As for Klobuchar, she’s more of a “positive” option who can help Biden in the Midwest. That’s likely where he needs the most help but she’s not as much of a bulldog as Harris. It might remind people of Hillary Clinton choosing the vanilla Tim Kaine as her VP back in 2016.

What About Stacey Abrams?

Abrams is third in the odds. For a long period of time, she was the frontrunner, but that was largely because Klobuchar and Harris were still viable presidential candidates.

Abrams, like Harris, overlaps with Biden in the sense that she’d mostly help with the black vote. He’s already doing really well in that regard. She’s from Georgia and Biden is strong in the South.

One of her main points – at least in the past – has been voter rights but this is not something that’s come up in any of the debates. It’s not something that is front and center right now. The only reason to pick Abrams is because Biden might be worried about states like North Carolina and Florida, and maybe this helps him win the electoral college there.

Biden Will Tab Klobuchar

At this point, I’d expect Biden to go with Klobuchar. She’s positive, she’s a female and she’s someone that can try to unite the party. The progressive wing of the party doesn’t love Harris, so she’s not going to help him with that base. Harris is also from California, so she’s not an asset for the Midwest.

On the other hand, Klobuchar should give Biden a boost in the Midwest. Remember, it was states like Wisconsin and Michigan that tilted the scales in Trump’s favor in 2016. Klobuchar is also a positive voice who could be counted upon to unite what has been a fractured party.

What If Sanders Wins?

If Sanders wins, it’s long been expected that he’d nominate Nina Turner as his Vice President. We’re a long way away from that happening but if he does get the nomination, that’s who I’d bet. He needs help with black voters and this would make an impact in that regard.
