One of the early kick-off games in the Champions League Group Stage on Wednesday is Eintracht Frankfurt vs Sporting Lisbon.

Firstly, I think neutrals around the globe are thrilled to see Die Adler back on the European stage. Last year, Frankfurt won the Europa League in a thrilling final in Seville, versus Rangers. Not to mention they went unbeaten in all 13 matches. As a result, they received an automatic Champions League bid, despite an 11th-place Bundesliga finish. This marks their first season in the competition, the only team in this year’s Champions League who can say that.

Conversely, Sporting Lisbon has a deep history in the Champions League, with exactly 100 matches played. They only have a 29% win percentage in the competition but are known to get in the goals. Regardless, Both Frankfurt and Sporting have +650 odds to win Group D, also featuring Tottenham and Marseille.

Overall, the moneyline odds for this match slightly favor Frankfurt with odds of +116. In all fairness, the start to the season has not been easy on Oliver Glasner’s men. They suffered a 6-1 home drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich, while also dropping the UEFA Super Cup to Real Madrid. Nonetheless, two consecutive wins versus Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig should give them bounds of confidence ahead of Wednesday.

Frankfurt’s future Champions League odds are +10000.

Over/Under Odds & Goalscorer Props
All in all, this match probably will not be short of goals. Currently, the over on 2.5 total goals sits at -145, while the under is at +115. Again, Sporting are a team that is expected to score goals in this competition.

I expect that they will do this through Pedro Goncalves, who is their talisman up top. The 24-year-old already has three goals to his name this season, producing a goal contribution every 90 minutes. Additionally, his odds to score anytime are +140. Frankfurt have not been the most defensively sound team this season, which bodes well for this play.

Glasner’s Three-Pronged Attack

On the other hand, Frankfurt’s offense is a bit more spread out. They will use a balanced attack of Randal Kolo Muani, Jesper Lindstrom and Daichi Kamada to break down the Sporting defense.

In particular, Muani is a newcomer this season and has made an immediate impact. The French forward has already accumulated two goals and four assists, which is a 3.6 overperformance on his xG+xA. His creativity and progressive dribbling moves make him a player that can facilitate his fellow attackers. Glasner also has the ability to bring on Lucas Alario, who signed from Leverkusen in the summer.

Considering Frankfurt has scored four goals in each of their last two games, I would be a little concerned for Sporting here.

The Home Field Advantage

Furthermore, I would be naïve to also not mention Frankfurt’s probable home advantage in this match. The Frankfurt fans are passionate to say the least and will make an intimidating environment for the Sporting players.

On top of that, Sporting have lost 13 of their last 14 away trips to Germany in European play. Last season, their only away victory in the Champions League was at Besiktas. Considering this will be a proper, European night, it is hard to not give another edge to the hosts.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction

Finally, my best bet for this match is the Frankfurt moneyline with odds of +116. I love the plus odds here, especially given Frankfurt’s resume in Europe last season. Sporting have started with way too mixed of a bag for me to take a flyer on them, even in a competition they are more experienced in.

Pick: Eintracht Frankfurt ML (+116)
