After a two-month break, CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying officially proceeds on Thursday. In one of the most intriguing clashes of the lot, Honduras will welcome Canada to the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula. The kick-off is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST.
The Hondurans find themselves at the bottom of the pack with no wins in eight games thus far. As for the Canadians, they’re in top spot and are currently the only team in the final round of qualifying who have yet to taste defeat.
The reverse fixture between the two countries ended in a 1-1 stalemate, with Cyle Larin salvaging a point for the Canucks after equalizing from the spot.

Can Honduras Find a Result?
It’s been a forgettable WCQ campaign for Honduras, collecting a mere three points thus far, resulting in their extremely long World Cup odds. In the process, they’ve bagged just five goals and conceded 15. However, Hernan Dario Gomez’s men have played slightly better across their last two qualifying games. On the November international break, the Hondurans had a 2-0 lead 60 minutes in, only for Panama to net three times in the last 15 minutes of the fixture to shock Los Catrachos.

Then on November 16th, it was another slim defeat at the hands of Costa Rica. The hosts went ahead early in the first half, but Romell Quioto equalized not long before the halftime whistle for Honduras. It looked like Gomez’s squad would secure a point until Gerson Torres headed home a winner at the death, handing the Hondurans yet another dismal result.

On a more positive note, La Bicolor has only lost once in their previous six encounters with Canada. With Alphonso Davies unavailable for the visitors, Honduras will be hopeful they can pull out at least another point here in front of their home supporters.
Can Canada Stay Afloat Without Alphonso?
The Canadians were dealt a crushing blow earlier this month when it was announced that Davies wouldn’t be playing for his country on this current international break after he was diagnosed with myocarditis following his COVID-19 diagnosis, which is essentially inflammation of the heart. The left-back, who typically plays in an attacking position for the Canucks, is feeling fine, but Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich isn’t risking his long-term health.

That means John Herdman’s side will need to get by in these next three games without their best player, which is undoubtedly going to be tough. But, given how they’ve been playing thus far, Canada seems to be in good hands. The Reds are flying high in qualifying, currently sitting a point above the USA for first place. While it was in November in the freezing cold of Edmonton, the Canadians pulled off the unthinkable, beating a very solid Mexico side by a score of 2-1.

It was their first victory against the Mexicans since 2000 and really proved that Canada is no longer a pushover in CONCACAF.
Coming into Thursday’s clash, they’re also riding a three-game winning streak, previously beating Panama and Costa Rica on home soil. Without Davies in the mix, Herdman will be relying heavily on Jonathan David and Cyle Larin up top, who have both been extremely clinical thus far, combining for seven goals in the final round of qualifying.

Honduras vs Canada Prediction
While Honduras does possess a very decent record against Canada, the visitors are a much different team than in years past. Even without Alphonso, I do firmly believe the Canadians will collect another victory here and inch closer to booking their ticket to Qatar. Take the moneyline.
