Julian Nagelsmann has quickly emerged as the favorite to become Tottenham Hotspur’s next manager after the sudden sacking of Jose Mourinho on Monday.

The 33-year-old is currently coach of RB Leipzig and led the German club to the semifinal of the Champions League last season. Meanwhile, Red Bull is also currently in second place in the Bundesliga.

Other Contenders for Tottenham Job

Furthermore, among the other coaches being touted for the job by the oddsmakers are Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, and former Bournemouth chief Eddie Howe,

The former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez and Nuno Espirito Santo, currently with Wolves, are also in the running.

The stunning news of Mourinho’s axing was announced by Tottenham on Monday.

Certainly, it came amid a dramatic day for the sport.

Importantly,  plans for a breakaway European Super League involving some of the continent’s biggest clubs were making headlines at the same time.

With Tottenham among the 12 clubs backing the new competition, this could have a bearing on who becomes the next Spurs’ boss.

At William Hill, Nagelsmann is priced as a +300 favorite to land the job in north London and is considered ready for a move to one of the game’s biggest clubs.

Even so, the Bayern Munich job may become available in the summer – and that would surely tempt Nagelsmann even more.

German Influence Key Factor

Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, may be influenced by the early success of Nagelsmann’s fellow German coach at Chelsea.

Nagelsmann certainly looks a good fit for Tottenham. The club has been impressed by Leipzig’s run last season to the last four of the UCL – where they were beaten 3-0 by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Nagelsmann was heavily linked with the Spurs job before Mourinho’s appointment.

He is followed by Leicester boss Rodgers, who on Sunday led his team to the FA Cup final and is priced at +450.

Howe lost his job as Bournemouth boss last summer. But he is the third favorite at +500.

Rafael Benitez Given 8-1 Odds

Then comes former Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United coach Rafael Benitez. Benitez is currently without a club but is rated at +800.

Benitez has won the Champions League and the Europa League twice and, importantly, is available, successful, and experienced. He could be a good outside bet.

Spurs’ club coaches Ryan Mason and Chris Powell have been put in temporary charge, while Tottenham faces an EPL game against Southampton looming on Wednesday.

Mourinho was in charge for only 17 months and his sacking came just six days before the EFL Carabao Cup final.

But Mason is only 29 and has no managerial experience. Still, he is quoted at +1000 to land the job permanently. However, he certainly will not get it.

Mourinho was in charge at Tottenham for only 17 months. His sacking came just six days before the EFL Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley next Sunday.

Spurs are in seventh place and they are unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League. However, that may be a moot point with suggestions that clubs involved in the new European Super League may be booted out of the UCL, anyway.

Further, Tottenham had won just once in the last five Premier League matches.

And Mourinho was coming under increasing criticism for his dour tactics  – which went against all of Tottenham’s attacking traditions.

Since December they have only won against Leeds, Sheffield United, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Aston Villa in the English top-flight.

They also suffered a humiliating exit from the Europa League’s last 16 against unfancied Dinamo Zagreb.

European Super League Makes It Complex

The Tottenham job is an attractive one. But any appointment may be affected by the acrid fall-out from the announcement of the European Super League scheme.

Some leading coaches may be unwilling to join a club that may be banned from existing European competitions.

However, some may be lured by the idea of leading a team in the new Super League which may begin in August.

Longshots

Against this complex backdrop, further coaches ranked in the betting include former Tottenham star and USA national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann at +1000, most recently the coach of Hertha Berlin.

After that, Fulham coach Scott Parker -a former Tottenham player – is surprisingly quoted at +1200.

Former Juventus coaches Massimiliano Allegro and Maurizo Sarri – who has also managed Chelsea are at +1600.

Next Tottenham Manager Best Bet

Third-favorite Howe is highly regarded in English football although his stock sank a little when Bournemouth was relegated from the EPL last season.

Rodgers has Leicester in third place in the EPL as well as in the FA Cup final. However, Nagelsmann will certainly attract interest in the Spurs’ boardroom and so far looks the most likely successor to Mourinho.

Pick: Julian Nagelsmann +300
