  • They are the defending champs after their Euro 2016 triumph in Paris
  • France and England are most favored to win at Wembley next year

Portugal are the reigning European soccer champions but their hopes of retaining their prize at Euro 2020 appear to be on the slide.

Although they added UEFA’S inaugural Nations League trophy to their cabinet earlier this month, their qualification campaign for next year’s European Championship finals has got off to a sluggish start.

Euro 2020 Odds

Team Euro 2020 Odds
France +350
England +450
Belgium +700
Germany +700
Spain +700
Netherlands +800
Italy +1600
Portugal +1600
Croatia +2500
Denmark +6600

They have drifted from +1300 to +1600 in Euro 2020 odds after drawing their opening two matches in Group B.

Portugal Seventh Favorites to Win Final at Wembley

Portugal are co-seventh favorites with Italy to win the final at Wembley in London next June behind France, England, Spain, Germany, and Belgium.

They are currently fourth in their group although the picture is deceptive. Their involvement in the Nations League finals meant they missed the most recent round of Euro 2020 leaders ties.

Group leaders Ukraine have 10 points compared to Portugal’s two, while second-placed Luxembourg have four points. But both teams have played four fixtures. Meanwhile, third-placed Serbia have four points from three games.

Portugal staged a goalless draw at home against Ukraine in their opening qualifying match in March and were then held 1-1 by Serbia – also at home.

They next face Serbia and Lithuania away from home in September.

World Cup holders France have +350 odds to win Euro 2020. They are followed by  much-improved England at +450. With the later stages at home, Gareth Southgate’ s 2018 World Cup semifinalists currently look a better value bet than Portugal. Spain, Germany and Belgium are all +700.

Despite their reputation as serial winners, Germany have not won this competition since 1976, but they look good value at the price too.

Spain are Only Team to Retain Trophy

Only once in the tournament’s 61-year history have the holders retained the Henri Delaunay Trophy. Spain won in 2008 and 2012 while sandwiching their World Cup triumph of 2010 in between.

The current Portugal side do not match their quality. And their superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will be 35 by the time next summer’s finals arrive.

He will surely view this as an opportunity to make a grand final bow from international tournament football.

Portugal are heavily reliant on the influence of Ronaldo, who has scored 88 times for his country.

Age certainly does not appear to be currently hampering him on the international stage. He scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s defeat of Switzerland in the Nations League semifinal in Porto. The team is heavily reliant on the influence of captain Ronaldo, who has scored 88 times for his country.

Portugal are ranked fifth in the world in the most recent FIFA ratings.

Euro 2020 Will Be Played Under New Format

The Euros will be played to a new format next year with matches involving the 24 qualifying teams to be staged in 12 cities in 12 different countries. The semifinals and final will take place under a more traditional tournament set-up at Wembley. The iconic  London stadium is also to stage four matches earlier in the tournament.

The other venues include Munich, Rome, Baku, St. Petersburg, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Glasgow, and Copenhagen.

Pick: England (+450)
