  • The final 16 have been determined at the WTA Indian Wells Masters, with all matches taking place Tuesday, March 15
  • The only top-12 seeds remaining are No. 3 Iga Swiatek, No. 5 Paula Badosa and No. 6 Maria Sakkari
  • Read on as we break down the draw and make some predictions

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty didn’t make the trip to Indian Wells in California.

In her absence, world No. 2 Barbora Krejcikova was the top seed – and pulled out at the last minute.

Struggling No. 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka lost her opening match.

So the Indian Wells Masters, on the women’s side, is completely up for grabs.

Odds as of March 15 at BetMGM

No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek was the favorite before the tournament began. And nothing that has happened in the first few rounds has done much to change that.

Iga Swiatek vs Angelique Kerber Prediction

There is a 14-year age difference between Swiatek, 20 and Kerber, 34. They’re meeting for the first time.

But both are Grand Slam champions. And with Kerber being of Polish extraction and living part of the time in that country, there are plenty of commonalities.

Beware of Swiatek being such a strong favorite in this one. While Kerber is at the stage of her career where she’s taking a few more tough losses and even appears jaded at times, that’s just when she rocks up and pulls off a vintage win.

The slower, gritty surface in Indian Wells is helpful for Kerber, who is more of a retriever while Swiatek, the more powerful player, can find the ball gets away from her more in the lighter desert air.

Swiatek has lost the first set in her first two matches before rolling to victory. So Kerber winning the first set (+250) might be worth a shot.

Pick: Over 20.5 games (+100)

Paula Badosa vs Leylah Fernandez Prediction

A lot has changed since Paula Badosa and Leylah Fernandez met for the only time, just over two years ago.

It was the first round of the qualifying at the Auckland tournament before the 2020 Australian Open. Ranked outside the top 200, Fernandez needed a wild card just to get into qualifying.

Badosa was ranked No. 95. And after winning the same junior French Open title four years before Fernandez, she was a promise still unfulfilled.

The Spaniard won, in two close sets. And then she lost to a rather obscure American player in the final qualifying round.

Fast forward two years and Fernandez is ranked No. 21, and the reigning US Open finalist. Badosa is at No. 7 – and she is the defending Indian Wells champion.

She won it just five months ago when the event was postponed from its regular March dates to October.

Fernandez escaped a tough night in her opening match when opponent Amanda Anisimova, after failing to convert on four match points, suddenly retired due to “illness” after losing the second-set tiebreak.

And then, she won in three against a quality player in Shelby Rogers.  The 19-year-old from Canada is playing well enough and is confident enough to give Badosa a run.

Pick: Match to Go Three Sets (+155)

Petra Martic vs Liudmila Samsonova Prediction

Petra Martic was ranked No. 14 as recently as two years ago. But she came into Indian Wells not having won back-to-back matches since last May.

So far in the California desert, she has won three straight: her opener against Anna Bondar, a tough two-setter against No. 19 seed Tamara Zidansek and – most notably – a three-set marathon win over reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

Samsonova is at a career-high ranking of No. 32. But she hasn’t beaten a player ranked higher than herself since last September.

And, notably, Martic is 3-0 against her (even if two of those wins came on Martic’s favored clay).

Martic’s slice has nice bite on the gritty Indian Wells surface, and her variety may prove to be too much.

Pick: Martic in the Upset (+130)
