Roughnecks on a Roll

We’re still just three weeks into the 2020 XFL season but we’re starting to get a clear picture of who’s who. At this point, the Roughnecks are the team to beat as they’re the last remaining undefeated team at 3-0 and are the favorites to win the XFL Championship at +200.

The Roughnecks have been led by a stellar offense, which is averaging a league-best 33.0 points per game and it’s also worth noting that they’ve played some decent teams so far. They stomped Josh Johnson’s Los Angeles Wildcats 37-17 and beat the St. Louis BattleHawks 28-24.

How Good are the Renegades?

For the first six quarters of the XFL season, the Renegades were not very good. They scored just six points in their first contest and had three at the half of Week 2. Since then, though, the light bulb has gone off. They scored 22 second-half points to beat Los Angeles on the road in Week 2 and scored 24 in their Week 3 win.

While their offense has known names like Landry Jones at quarterback and Cameron Artis-Payne at running back, it’s the defense that’s really impressed. They’re allowing a league-low 15.0 points per game. They’ve held their last two opponents to just 3.7 yards-per-play and gave up 3.2 in Week 1 to St. Louis, according to the Renegades team stats.

What’s the Best Bet?

This is an interesting matchup as the Roughnecks look like the team to beat but I’m not entirely sure they are that far ahead of the pack in terms of quality. They had their first road game of the season last week and struggled a little bit with the Tampa Bay Vipers, who are 0-3.

They got the win but I was surprised it wasn’t a blowout. The Roughnecks gave up 129 rushing yards last week and allowed the Vipers to convert nine-of-18 third downs.

I actually like Dallas in this spot as they’re a team that’s on the rise. They’ve played strong football over the last six quarters and this is a good opportunity for them to make a statement. Jones seems to have finally figured things out at quarterback while Artis-Payne comes in as the league’s second-leading rusher.

The key here is the Dallas defense, which is quite strong. We’ll see if Houston can cut through as nobody has slowed them yet but I think that on the road, Dallas might be able to keep them under wraps a little bit. Houston opened -1 but now we’re getting Dallas at +1.5 so I’ll take a shot with them.
