The Holy War rarely carries stakes like this. No. 3 Utah hosts No. 7 BYU at noon ET on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, with ABC carrying the broadcast. The Utes are 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Big 12 play, while the Cougars arrive at 7-1 (4-1 in the Big 12).
Utah is one of only three unbeaten FBS teams left and sits alone in first place in the Big 12. The Utes are 8-0 for the first time since 2010, and BYU would love nothing more than to end that run in its rival’s building.
The early BYU vs Utah odds install the Utes as 5.5-point home favorites with a total of 47.5. Below, I break down my early BYU vs Utah prediction, plus where I see value on the spread and total before the Holy War odds move this week.
Early BYU vs Utah Prediction
Prediction: Utah covers -5.5 and the game stays Under 47.5.
Utah has been the more complete team lately, while BYU needed a late fourth-quarter drive to hold off Arizona State at home. I’m backing two early picks in this rivalry: the Utes laying the points and a lower-scoring game than the total suggests.
Early BYU vs Utah Pick #1: Utah -5.5
- Pick: Utah -5.5 (-111 at BetMGM)
Utah’s offense was nearly flawless in a 49-25 win at Cincinnati. Devon Dampier completed 22 of 29 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, and the Utes piled up 534 total yards, including 268 on the ground, at 7.3 yards per play.
The defense did damage, too. Rabbit Evans returned a fumble 51 yards for a score and Elijah Davis added a 39-yard pick-six, helping Utah build a 42-6 halftime lead. That is the profile of a team built to create separation from a quality opponent.
BYU, meanwhile, rushed for just 47 yards against Arizona State. The rushing attack largely relies on LJ Martin, who has been out of action since October 3. Martin could return against the Utes, but it is far from a guarantee. A stalled ground game at Rice-Eccles would put heavy pressure on Bear Bachmeier against a defense that scores on its own.
Early BYU vs Utah Pick #2: Under 47.5
- Pick: Under 47.5 (-111 at BetMGM)
BYU’s defense gives this total a real path under. The Cougars posted a season-high six sacks against Arizona State, all in the first half and their most in a game since 2015. Faletau Satuala led the unit with nine tackles, while Isaiah Glasker and Cade Uluave each added a sack.
The BYU offense has not been explosive, either. Bachmeier threw for 236 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and Sione Moa accounted for two of the Cougars’ three touchdowns. If BYU can’t run the ball, long scoring drives will be hard to come by.
Utah also held Cincinnati to a single field goal on two first-half red zone trips. With the Utes able to lean on a ground game that ran for 268 yards last week, I expect a physical, clock-draining rivalry game rather than a shootout.
BYU vs Utah Spread & Holy War Odds
Odds verified on November 2, 2026, at BetMGM.
BetMGM lists Utah as a 5.5-point home favorite, and the -217 moneyline carries a 68.5% implied win probability. BYU at +180 implies 35.7%, so the market views the Cougars as a live but clear underdog in this year’s Holy War.
The 47.5 total is modest for a game featuring Utah’s offense, which points to a defense-first rivalry. Claim the BetMGM promo code before kickoff, and compare the latest college football odds as this line settles.
The stakes stretch well beyond bragging rights. The winner gains major ground in the conference championship odds race, and an unbeaten Utah would strengthen its position in the odds to make the College Football Playoff.
BYU vs Utah Recent Form
Both teams won last Saturday, but the box scores tell two very different stories. Here is how Utah’s road rout of Cincinnati compares to BYU’s home win over Arizona State.
Utah’s latest result was a statement, while BYU’s was a grind. The Utes dominated on both sides of the ball, but the Cougars’ pass rush is the one unit that clearly matches up. That split supports Utah on the spread and a lower-scoring game script.
