Two of the more under the radar squads to watch out for in college hoops go head-to-head on Friday, January 27th when the Iona Gaels (13-6, 10-9 ATS) pay a visit to the Siena Saints (13-7, 12-7-1 ATS). Tipoff for this clash is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET from MVP Arena in Albany, New York.

This is a massive game when it comes to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings, as the Saints and Gales currently own the top two conference records. Despite being the home side and sitting in top spot in the MAAC, the Saints are 5.5-point underdogs in the college basketball odds.

Iona Gaels Struggling to Find Consistency

It’s been an up and down few weeks for the Gaels as they look to regain the form that saw them win seven of nine contests in December. They’ve alternated wins and losses in their last five games. In their last outing, they squeaked by Manhattan with an 84-76 overtime victory.

Playing road games has been a bit of a problem for the Gaels as they own just a 2-3 away record. Five of their next seven are on the road so fixing that issue will go a long way in determining how they finish the season.

By far, the Gaels are the best team from the MAAC according to KenPom, ranking 77th overall while the next highest ranked team in the conference is Quinnipiac sitting 65 places below them.

Iona is just the type of team that could throw a scare into the best teams in the odds to win the NCAA tournament if they make the big dance and square off against one of the favorites in an early round matchup.

They’re solid on both ends of the court and don’t rely on any one player to carry the squad. Three players average more than 15 points per game for the Gaels with guard Daniss Jenkins pouring in 16.3 per outing and leading the way.

Siena Saints Get It Done with D

Siena has been struggling to score points lately, but their defense has picked them up while they’ve put up a 5-2 record this month. In their last five contests, they’ve gone under the betting total four times. Previous to that, they hit the over four out of five times.
