The Yankees will be looking for their first series sweep of the season Thursday afternoon when they face the Tigers. New York has posted 4-2, and 5-3 victories over the past two nights, which was kept them tied atop a crowded AL East division. The Yankees are currently tied with Toronto and Tampa Bay at 7-5, and oddsmakers expect their recent winning streak to continue in the series finale in Detroit.

New York opened up as -155 moneyline favorites, in a contest that features a total of 8 runs. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10pm ET at Comerica Park, with 66 degree temperatures and a 90% chance of showers in the forecast.

Probable Pitchers

The Yankees, a top-six contender in the World Series odds, will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound, while Detroit will counter with Michael Pineda.

Montgomery got off to a rough start to the season against the Red Sox, but rebounded nicely in his second start against the Orioles. The southpaw tossed 5 innings of shutout ball versus Baltimore, scattering just 3 hits.

He pitched better last season than his 6-7 record might indicate, as he posted a 3.83 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over a career-high 30 starts. Montgomery won his lone career start versus the Tigers, and has held the batters on their current roster to a .210 average over 38 at-bats.

Montgomery vs Pineda (2021) Stats

Jordan Montgomery
VS
Michael Pineda
0-0 Record 9-8
3.24 ERA 3.62
1.20 WHIP 1.23
.226 OBA .265
2.0 SO/W Ratio 4.2

Pineda will make first start of the season for Detroit, after starting the year in AAA Toledo. He was recalled after Casey Mize was placed on the injured list, and his season debut will come against the team he spent four seasons with from 2014-17.

Pineda is coming off a solid season in 2021, his last as a member of the Twins. He posted a 3.62 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 21 starts, while stranding a career-best 77% of the runners he put on base.

Pineda made one start versus the Yankees last season but didn’t factor in to the decision. He yielded four hits and two runs over 4.1 innings, striking out two and walking two.

The New York batters he has faced over his career have not had much success over a small sample with the exception of DJ LeMahieu. The Yankees infielder is 3-for-6 lifetime against Pineda with an RBI.

New York Yankees vs Detroit Tigers Betting Analysis

New York may have to abandon its Bronx Bomber nickname unless the team’s power suddenly reappears. Longshot AL MVP odds candidate Aaron Judge has just one home run and two RBI this season, while fellow bash brother Giancarlo Stanton has only gone deep twice.

Entering play on Wednesday, the Yankees ranked 22nd in baseball in slugging and that number would be far worse if not for the bat of Anthony Rizzo. The 32-year-old cranked his team leading fourth home run on Wednesday giving him two more than anyone else on the roster.

Seven of nine New York regulars are batting below .260 this season, with LeMahieu and Aaron Hicks being the lone exceptions.

Luckily for the Yankees the Tigers offense has been even worse lately. Detroit ranks 27th in runs per game, and has scored just eight times over their past four contests. Only the Orioles have a lower slugging percentage this season than the Tigers in the AL, while Spencer Torkelson is the only player on the roster who’s reached two home runs and five RBI. Not surprisingly, they’re projected to finish with the fifth fewest victories in the AL per the MLB win totals.

On the bright side for Detroit fans, Miguel Cabrera smacked two hits in Wednesday’s loss, and is now just one shy of 3,000 for his storied career.

New York Yankees vs Detroit Tigers Pick

These two teams have a strong recent history of playing low scoring games, and I’m willing to bet that trend continues on Thursday in cool, rainy conditions.

Each of the past six meetings between these two clubs have failed to eclipse 8 runs, while the under is a combined 16-7 in Yankees and Tigers games this season.

Pick: Under 8 (+100)
