Cinderella has assumed the form of a Peacock this year at the NCAA Tournament. A Saint Peter’s Peacock to be precise. The 15th seeded Peacocks will look to continue their fairytale March Madness run on Friday (March 25) when they face 3-seed Purdue.

The Boilermakers are the highest seed remaining in the East Region, and are heavy favorites to end Saint Peter’s improbable success.

Saint Peter’s Peacocks Betting Analysis

The Peacocks are just the third 15-seed to reach the Sweet 16, joining Oral Roberts last year and Florida Golf Coast from 2013. No 15-seed has ever advanced to the Elite Eight, which explains why their Final Four odds are sitting at +3200.

This is the first time in four attempts the Peacocks have made it out of the First Round in the March Madness bracket, but their recent success shouldn’t be considered a fluke. Saint Peter’s is a gritty, hard working them that is excellently coached. They won seven straight MAAC games down the stretch en route to the conference title, and are full of tenacious defenders.

They began their NCAA Tournament journey by shocking blue blood Kentucky, holding the 2-seed Wildcats to 42.6% from the field. They followed up that upset by downing 7-seed Murray State, snapping the Racers’ 21-game winning streak. The Peacocks held Murray State to 34.6% from the field, and didn’t trail for a single second.

Saint Peter’s led the MAAC in scoring defense this season and relies on defense to stay in games. Their offense is underwhelming, averaging only 66.9 points per game, while ranking 233rd in shooting percentage. They’ve been able to overcome a below average offense by holding seven of their past eight opponents to 65 points or less.

Now comes arguably their biggest challenge yet, literally. They don’t feature a single starter taller than 6-8 which spells trouble versus Purdue’s 7-4 star center Zach Edey.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Analysis

The Boilermakers have posted back-to-back convincing wins to start March Madness. They knocked off Yale by 22 points in the First Round, and Texas by 10 points in the Second Round. Edey is averaging 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game so far, but he’s not the only tower the Peacocks will have to deal with.

Trevion Williams, the team’s third leading scorer, stands 6-10 giving Purdue an immense advantage in the front court. Not only are the Boilermakers loaded up front, but they feature one of the best point guards in the country as well.

Jaden Ivey is a top-eight contender in the Wooden Award odds, and a projected Lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft. He’s averaging 20 points per game so far during March Madness, while knocking down 50% of his threes.

Purdue is a terrific offensive team ranking seventh in the nation in points per game, sixth in field goal percentage, and fourth in three-point efficiency. Defensively, they dominate on the glass and stay out of foul trouble. They yield just 9 free throw attempts per game, making their opponent work for every single bucket. No wonder they’re a top-four contender in the NCAA Tournament odds.

Saint Peter’s vs Purdue Pick

If you want to root for the Peacocks’ magical run to continue, take the 13 points. Saint Peter’s is a tournament best 22-9 against the spread this season, and have covered in nine straight.

However, don’t sleep on under 135 points. The Peacocks are exceptionally strong in their own end, and even though they appear overmatched by Purdue’s twin towers, they’ve consistently found ways to limit even their most imposing opponent’s efficiency this season.

At the other end of the court, we should be concerned with Saint Peter’s ability to score. They’ve played over their heads offensively through two games, and should see fewer second chance opportunities and free throw attempts versus the Boilermakers.

Five of the Peacocks’ last eight games have fallen under the total, while the under is 9-3 in Purdue’s last 12 outings.

Pick: Under 135 (-110)
