It took all of four snaps under center in New York for all of the offseason positivity around the New York Jets to dissipate. With Bills DE Leonard Floyd beating Jets LT Duane Brown and bringing Aaron Rodgers down for a sack on the his fourth play of the game, Rodgers suffered a season-ending torn Achilles injury. The injury has sent shockwaves through the Super Bowl odds markets, with New York plummetting down the oddsboard.

Despite the Jets fighting back from being down 13-3 to force overtime and win 22-16, oddsmakers aren’t convinced the Jets will carry that momentum for long this season.

No matter how you look at it the Jets’ Super Bowl odds have cratered. At Bet365 they were +1600 on Sunday afternoon. They were only +2500 at DraftKings on Monday. Come Tuesday morning Bet365 have adjusted the Jets to +4000, while they’re even longer shots at DraftKings now at +6000.

Life After Rodgers

Certainly life “with” Rodgers never really got off the ground. But we’ve already seen what this Jets team looks like with Wilson under center. Last year in nine games Wilson was 132/242 with a 54.5 completion percentage to go with six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Including last night, Wilson has 16 TDs to 19 INTs in his career.

The Jets struggled to move the ball with Wilson at QB last night again as Wilson went just 14/21 for one touchdown and interceptionm with 140 passing yards.

The Jets defense allowed 18.6 points per game last year, good for second overall. But the defense could only do so much. Offensively, New York scored an average of only 17.4 PPG to rank a dismal 29th. They finished the season 7-10 and missed the playoffs.

The defense is solid and the Jets made improvements elsewhere, but an offense led by Wilson is just not a Super Bowl team. It may not even be a playoff team. The Jets’ NFL playoff odds are currently priced at +215 for the “yes” and -280 for the “no” at DraftKings.

Jets Look to Add Rodgers Replacement

There’s no real way to replace a four-time NFL MVP and previous Super Bowl winner. But the Jets will at the very least need QB depth and at the best, find someone to take over from Wilson.

Atop the NFL free agent list, are veteran QBs Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Colt McCoy, Joe Flacco and Nick Foles. None of these options scream Super Bowl contender, but all have plenty of experience. Ryan, Flacco and Foles have all played in the big game and Flacco and Foles have Super Bowl MVP awards on their resume.

Flacco also has experiecne playing with the Jets, while McCoy has proved to be a capable backup throughout his career.

While some Jets fans were clamoring for Tom Brady to come out of retirement to save their season, that’s just not a viable option. Brady has stated he is retired for good this time, has a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders and has a lucrative broadcasting deal lined up with FOX for 2024.

Past that, the Jets could look to trade for a competent backup from someone else in the league. The current candidates could be Andy Dalton (CAR), Jacoby Brissett (WAS), Sam Darnold (SF), Taylor Heinicke (ATL), Teddy Bridgewater (DET), Gardner Minshew (IND), Tyler Huntley (BAL), Tyrod Taylor (NYG), Jameis Winston (NO), Mitch Trubisky (PIT) and Marcus Mariota (PHI).

Three Interceptions By Whitehead

There were some positives for the Jets. Obviously they prevailed with the win to take a share of the AFC East lead at 1-0 with Miami.

Breece Hill rushed for 127 yards, Garrett Wilson pulled down an incredible catch in the endzone for a score, and the Jets defense had five sacks and were led by a standout performance by Jordan Whitehead who had three interceptions. In fact, Whitehead just cashed a season-long incentive bonus of $250,000 for finishing the year with 3+ INTs.

AFC East Odds

Team Odds
Buffalo Bills +125
Miami Dolphins +150
New York Jets +550
New England Patriots +850

The Bills are are still favored to win the AFC East, but the Jets’ odds have slumped to +550 after the Rodgers injury.

Before Monday Night Football, it was a pretty clear three-way race in the AFC East odds. On Monday the Bills lead the way at +140, followed by the Dolphins at +210, Jets at +290 and Patriots at +1000 at DraftKings.

The Bills are still favored and the Pats’ are still longshots, at least at Bet365, but the Jets have seen their odds drop to +550 at Bet365 and +600 at DraftKings.

At DK, the Dolphins have actually overtaken the Bills by a slight margin, listed at +135, to Buffalo’s +145.

Looking forward, the Jets have to be a fade team in all futues markets barring a trade for a new quarterback. They’ll pull some upsets this season based on their defense and playmakers, but the odds will be against them in many games. They’re currently heavy 8.5-point underdogs versus the Cowboys in Week 2.
