  • Oddsmakers list the Toledo Rockets as +225 favorites to win the 2019 MAC football title
  • Six other teams are given odds of +1200 or lower
  • The Buffalo Bulls (10-4) were 2018 MAC champions

The MAC certainly isn’t the best conference in college football, but in terms of races, it just might be the best during the 2019 season. Any one of seven teams could easily lay claim to the title, according to oddsmakers.

Oddsmakers have established the Toledo Rockets as +225 chalk in their 2019 Mid-American conference title odds, but there are a half-dozen other schools with a legitimate chance to draw a chalk outline around Toledo’s title hopes.

The MAC hasn’t had a repeat champion since 2011-12. In the last four seasons, four different programs have claimed the conference crown: Buffalo (2018), Western Michigan (2017), Toledo (2016) and Bowling Green (2015).

Rockets to the Top?

Just two seasons removed from their most recent title, Toledo regularly pulls in crowds above 20,000 in a league where 15,000 is considered a good number. That helps to make recruiting just a little bit easier.

The Rockets return two QBs who started games last season in Mitchell Guadagni and Eli Peters. Sophomore running back Bryant Koback could be a sensation. But Toledo must replace its top three receivers and remodel a depleted defense.

On talent alone, the Rockets aren’t the best team. But they have the best schedule. Toledo gets Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and Northern Illinois at home, and doesn’t face Ohio or Miami (Ohio), the top two contenders in the East Division.

That could be enough to put the Rockets into orbit.

Tasty Big MAC Contenders

Western Michigan returns 17 starters, including QB Jon Wassink, WR D’Wayne Eskridge and RB LeVante Bellamy. Eastern Michigan may have its best team since the 1980s.

Ohio QB Nathan Rourke passed for over 2,400 yards and ran for more than 1,000 yards last season. Defending champs Northern Illinois have plenty of holes to fill, but senior QB Mike Glass is solid.

If Buffalo and Miami (Ohio) can find a QB to take over the offense, don’t count those schools out, either.

Who’s the MAC Daddy?

As much as Toledo’s schedule is favorable, it’s difficult to look past talent. And Western Michigan looks to be loaded with ability.

The Broncos appeared to be the team to beat last season until Wassink was lost to an ankle injury. They return 85-percent of last season’s offensive and defensive producers, which makes them the most experienced FBS team.

Ride the Broncos to the MAC title at +600.
