  • The Kentucky Derby will be run today at Churchill Downs in Loiusville, KY
  • Sportsbooks are listing Game Winner as the favorite
  • Is there value on Game Winner, or perhaps someone else?

When likely favorite Omaha Beach scratched out of the Kentucky Derby this week, there was some question who would emerge as the new most likely winner. Trainer Bob Baffert, the winner of the Triple Crown last year with Justify and a five time Derby victor, has three contenders with big chances. It is his horse, Game Winner, who has seemingly risen to the top among bettors.

Because of the scratch, and as opinions have shifted, our Kentucky Derby Odds Tracker has seen notable movement.

Let’s take a look at the updated 2019 Kentucky Derby odds and see who appears to be the best bet.

The Favorite: Game Winner

The champion two year old from last year finished a perfect four-for-four rookie campaign with an impressive win at the Breeders’ Cup. In two races this year he has finished just behind Omaha Beach (a nose in March), and Roadster (half a length in April). Did he peak too early, or is he battle tested and sitting on an A+ effort? While he is one of several top tier contenders, there is more value on other horses.

Contenders with Decent Prices

Baffert’s horses are the top three picks at most sportsbooks, and on paper they appear to be the three best. However, in early wagering at tracks across the country Maximum Security and Tacitus both were getting a ton of support.

In the last couple of days at Churchill Downs being on the lead early in the race has been a great recipe for success. Maximum Security is the quickest horse out of the blocks and is four-for-four in his career. Sure he was a cheap horse originally, not bred regally, but how can you knock his performances?

Tacitus has won three straight races, and while his competition isn’t the best in this field, he has looked good in each race and seems to improve every time on the track.

The horse getting a ton of buzz in Louisville is By My Standards. He has worked great this week and fired a huge effort to win the Louisiana Derby at 22/1 in March. He might be the horse that is peaking at the right time.
