The Richmond Spiders shocked the A-10 by winning the conference tournament. Their reward, a March Madness date with Iowa on Thursday (March 17), a 5-seed who boasts one of the most impressive resumes in all of college hoops.

Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Analysis
Iowa is fresh off capturing its first Big Ten Title since 2006, and is priced more like a low end 3-seed or high end 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament odds. They’ve won nine of their past 10 overall, and have absolutely dominated teams that rank outside the top-75 like Richmond – more on that later.
Five of those nine victories down the stretch for the Hawkeyes were against teams in the March Madness bracket. They rank 13th or 14th in raw efficiency per most advanced analytic sites, but 11th in the nation if you factor in games lost due to injury or COVID.
They boast the second best offense in the country per KenPom, and feature Keegan Murray, a top-three contender in the Wooden Award odds. Murray was recently named March Madness’ number one player per ESPN, and it’s hard to argue against that.
Keegan Murray is currently our highest graded player this year!
If he remains as the top graded player by the end of the NCAA tourney, Iowa would have the highest graded player on their team for 3 straight seasons!

He’s fresh off pouring in 103 points in four Big Ten Tournament games, and finished fourth in all of college hoops in scoring.
Iowa ranks first nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8), fourth in points per game (83.8), and ninth in average score margin (+12.5). They bury over 9 three’s per outing, while shooting 46.4% from the field.
I’ve seen 18 teams play in the past week – 8 in the Big East, 8 in the Big Ten as well as Duke and UNC.
The most impressive?
The Iowa Hawkeyes.

Defensively, the numbers aren’t nearly as impressive, but fortunately a date with the Spiders is not very intimidating.
Richmond Spiders Betting Analysis
The Spiders were a lacklustre 10-8 in conference play during the regular season, but ramped up their game in the A-10 Tournament, especially on defense.

They yielded 68.3 points per game during conference play, but held their opponents in the A-10 Tournament to an average of only 62 points per contest en route to the title. Granted, only one of those four opponents graded out better than 71st in offensive efficiency per KenPom, but they clearly picked up the effort at that end of the court.
Unfortunately for them, they’re not likely to hold the Hawkeyes under 71 points, as no Big Ten program accomplished that feat over the final six weeks of the season. In order to keep up with Iowa, Richmond is going to have to match them offensively, something that doesn’t seem very likely.

The Spiders put up more than 68 points once in their final seven games, despite not facing an opponent ranked inside the top-55. They didn’t square off against a single ranked team all season, and the lone top-45 program they did play (Mississippi State) they lost by 11 at home.
They rank 127th in field goal percentage (44.4%), 175th in three-point field goal percentage (33.7%), and 317th in offensive rebounds per game (6.5).
Richmond vs Iowa Pick
The Hawkeyes have beaten their fair share of March Madness teams this season, but have absolutely dominated teams ranked outside the top-75. They’re 12-0 in those contests, with an average margin of victory of 24.7 points.
The #Hawkeyes put together one of the most dominating runs in B1G Tournament history, breaking six team single Big Ten Tournament records:
◾ Points (351)
◾ FG made (123)
◾ FG Attempts (245)
◾ 3-point FG Made (48)
◾ 3-point FG attempts (111)
◾ Assists (75) pic.twitter.com/XTSCTcmxuU— Iowa Men’s Basketball (@IowaHoops) March 14, 2022
They’re 10-4 against the spread this season as a favorite of 9 or more points, while Richmond has covered in just eight of its last 12 contests.
It’s often a popular choice to take a 12-seed over a 5-seed when filling out your bracket, but steer clear of that notion in this matchup. Iowa looks more likely to be a player in the Final Four odds than a candidate to be upset in the round of 64.
