Mired in a three-game losing streak, the New York Yankees got some good news ahead of their game on Tuesday (August 31st) against the Los Angeles Angels. The Bronx Bombers will no longer have to face AL MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani on the mound, as the 27-year-old is nursing a sore hand.
Ohtani is still expected to be in the lineup for LA, however the pitching duties have now been handed over to Jamie Barria.

Initially, The Yankees opened as a short road favorite with Ohtani projected to be their opponent. The pitching change has caused a drastic shift in the odds, as New York is now a -195 moneyline favorite.
The matchup features a total of 9, and first pitch is scheduled for 9:38 pm ET at Angel Stadium. The weather looks absolutely ideal, as clear skies and 64 degree night time temperatures are in the forecast.
Probable Pitchers
The drop-off from Ohtani to Barria on the mound is significant. Ohtani boasts an 8-1 record, with a 3.00 ERA and .193 opponent batting average, numbers Barria can’t even sniff.
The 25-year-old will make just his seventh start this season, and hasn’t made it out of the 4th inning in any of his past four outings. LA has lost his last four starts by a combined total of 35-7, and Barria owns a 5.31 xFIP and 6.15 xERA in 2021.
Taillon vs Barria
8-4 | Record | 2-2 |
4.18 | ERA | 5.56 |
1.23 | WHIP | 1.53 |
.244 | OBA | .287 |
3.3 | SO/W Ratio | 1.5 |
New York snapped out of a mini-offensive slump on Monday, crossing the plate seven times. A date with Barria is a perfect opportunity for the Yanks to snap their losing streak, and let’s not forget, prior to this skid they had reeled off 13 straight victories.

During that stretch, the Bronx Bombers scored at least five runs 11 times, crossing the plate at least seven times in six of those outings.
New York will counter with Jameson Taillon, who’s hit a rough patch of his own over his past three starts. The right-hander has allowed 11 runs over that span, and is fresh off his second shortest outing of the season. He lasted just 3.2 innings in Oakland on Thursday, surrendering five runs, including two homers, in a no decision.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Yankees Batters | Batting Average vs Barria | Angels Batters | Batting Average vs Taillon |
---|---|---|---|
Joey Gallo | .133 | David Fletcher | .333 |
DJ LeMahieu | .000 | Phil Gosselin | .000 |
Rougned Odor | .200 | Jose Iglesias | .750 |
Giancarlo Stanton | .000 | Juan Lagares | .000 |
Brett Gardner | .333 | Shohei Ohtani | .667 |
Gary Sanchez | .000 | Max Stassi | .333 |
Luke Voit | .000 | Kurt Suzuki | .333 |
Aaron Judge | 1.000 | Jared Walsh | .000 |
Taillon has faced the Angels once this season, and the result wasn’t pretty. He allowed nine hits and five runs over 5.1 innings back in June, and LA took him deep three times.

Two of those homers were by Ohtani, who leads MLB with 42 home runs. The long ball has been an issue for Taillon all season, as his 1.49 HR/9 rate is by far the worst of his career.
Yankees vs Angels Pick
Straight up, the Yankees make sense as a play, but not at their current -195 moneyline price. Instead, it makes more sense to target the total. This game’s over/under opened at 8.5, and only moved half a run in light of the Ohtani news.
That’s not enough of an adjustment considering the drop-off from him to Barria. Given that Taillon is also struggling, and both teams have enough firepower to produce a shootout, much like they did on Monday, I like targeting not only the over for 9 innings, but 5 innings as well.
Pick: Over 9 (-110), Over 5 First 5 innings (-105)
