  • Antonio Brown’s eight-game suspension is coming to a conclusion and he’ll be available to return soon
  • Brown hasn’t played since Week 2 of the 2019 season
  • The Green Bay Packers had previously been favored to sign Brown but now the Seattle Seahawks are the favorite

Antonio Brown’s eight-game suspension is coming to an end. That means that he could – emphasis on could – return to the NFL. It all depends on whether teams want to give him that seventh chance. Sarcasm aside, he’s still a very talented wide receiver and the Seattle Seahawks appear to be interested.

Based on those early rumors, the Seahawks are favored to sign him. Are they the best bet with this prop or is there value elsewhere?

AB Has Been Out A While

The last time we saw Antonio Brown in action was Week 2 of the 2019 season. Prior to that, he had played full time with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. When you look at the game logs, it feels like he’s really just missed one season but the reality is that he’s had a career’s worth of transgression in that span. That’s why it feels like it’s been so long.

To recap, Brown bailed on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17 of the 2019 season when they were trying to make the playoffs. At the time, we had scant details. Later on, we found out that he refused to practice. The Steelers abruptly traded him in the offseason in what seemed like a great trade for the then-Oakland Raiders, picking up a star wideout for peanuts.

However, Brown’s shenanigans carried over to the Raiders where he showed up to training camp in a hot air balloon, refused to practice because of a bizarre helmet issue and then called General Manager Mike Mayock a ‘cracker’. The Raiders then released Brown and things went downhill from there.

While the New England Patriots briefly took a flier on Brown for that Week 2 game last season, we’ve since seen Brown have meltdowns on Twitter, argue with police and his baby’s mama on Instagram Live and get arrested. There are also other allegations of sexual assault and various other wrongdoings.

The issue is that Brown is still a wildly talented wide receiver and is still just 32 years old. If he’s focused and avoiding off-field issues, he could genuinely change the trajectory of a team. That’s why several are interested.

Seahawks Are The Best Bet

The main rumors here have been teams like the Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles seem like an unlikely fit because Doug Pederson isn’t the type of guy that likes me-first personalities. They’re also not one player away from contending, so why both.

As for the Packers, they were originally favored but they seem to have fairly good team chemistry and Brown would be a very risky addition. They have also spent very little time investing in or improving their receiving corps, so it feels a bit bizarre for them to start here.

As for the Ravens, they just added Dez Bryant to their practice squad. It’s possible they still splurge for Brown but they have mostly been mum on AB. Lamar Jackson and Hollywood Brown – Antonio’s cousin – have lobbied for Antonio but the coaching staff and front office haven’t said much. It’s likely that Bryant fills their need for now.

That means things set up well for the Seahawks. Pete Carroll often likes taking chances on talented but sometimes troubled players. He has a history of getting on the same page with these guys and getting the most out of them, so that’s why Seattle seems like a fit.

With Brown, the Seahawks could push David Moore out of the team’s top three and give Seattle a lethal combination of Brown-D.K. Metcalf-Tyler Lockett. Given how bad their defense is, adding to the offense could make sense. Although they are the chalk here, this is the scenario that makes the most sense.
