Multiple reschedulings have happened for this bout, but Herring vs Frampton is finally coming to fruition now.

Jamel Herring’s Third WBO Title Defense

Jamel Herring has a pair of defenses of his WBO crown under his belt at this point. The champion is riding a six-fight win streak overall heading into this weekend’s prizefight.

After capturing the crown from Masayuki Ito in May 2019, Herring bested Lamont Roach (November 2019 via unanimous decision) and Jonathan Oquendo (September 2020 via disqualification from an errant headbutt that cut Herring in the fifth frame).

After the relatively inauspicious nature of his last bout outcome, Jamel Herring is looking to make it “third-time’s the charm” in a big way as he enters this next world championship affair.

Not only is this a significant prizefight for both, but it could also mark the end of a career.

Carl Frampton has been vocal ahead of this fight about hanging up the gloves if he loses. So there is a compounded sense of pressure and a compounded sense of what’s at stake here.

Carl Frampton’s Chance To Make History

Carl Frampton is a former two-division world champion at both junior featherweight as well as featherweight.

As Herring pursues his own version of “third time’s the charm”, so does Frampton. He looks to become a world champion in a third-weight category this weekend.

That win would cement a place in history for Carl Frampton, who would become the first three-weight world boxing champion the island of Ireland has ever known.

Carl Frampton’s last bout marked his sole outing of 2020. He halted Darren Traynor in the seventh round of their August lightweight bout.

These 130 pounders match up quite well with one another, and there is tremendous parity in this crossroads bout (as evidenced by the even line put out by oddsmakers).

Herring has a gigantic seven-inch reach advantage, while Frampton has the edge in experience and speed overall. Frampton also has a more notable stoppage rate of 57 percent as compared to Herring’s sub-fifty percent finishing rate.

Frampton has a lot of tricks though and should be able to close the gap provided by Herring’s reach edge to get in some close-quarters work. It will be intriguing to see how Herring manages range and what his aptitude for phone booth fighting is should Frampton be able to get in close with frequency.

Herring vs Frampton Tale of the Tape

Ultimately, I see Jamel Herring getting it done and making the third successful defense of his WBO gold.

The odds on this contest going over ten and a half rounds are at -400 at DraftKings, and I think that is a safe bet.

I think there’s good value in pursuing prop bets on this bout going the distance (-335) and Herring winning via decision (+165).

Pick: Jamel Herring (-110)
