The Match III: Champions for Change was a success with Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley handily defeating the duo of Steph Curry and Peyton Manning. More importantly, the event raised an estimated $4.5 million for historically black colleges and universities.

Phil and Charles were underdogs to emerge victorious, with the thought being that Barkley would put Lefty in bad positions to have to scramble from. As it turned out, The Round Mound of Rebound mostly hit the ball well, didn’t have a hitch in his swing, and putted great. The Curry/Manning duo disappointed with poor putting and couldn’t get anything going after winning the first hole.

Following that lashing by Phil the Thrill and Chuck, there is no shortage of potential other players that could breathe new life into the event, with Tony Romo and Michael Jordan favored to play for the first time in ‘The Match’ series.

Tony Romo Has To Play In Next Match

It’s actually fairly surprising that Tony Romo hasn’t played in ‘The Match’ yet, with the second and third versions featuring fellow quarterbacks Peyton Manning in both and Tom Brady in the second one. Romo has played in a few PGA Tour events on sponsor exemptions, so he has the game to show up well for an event like this.

Though the date and course haven’t been named for a potential fourth iteration of the Match, it likely won’t be during NFL season where Romo would be calling games. So it would constitute a pretty big surprise if he wasn’t involved in the next one, especially given that Curry and Manning didn’t exactly bring their ‘A’ game to the last one.

Michael Jordan Would Be A Dream Competitor

Who wouldn’t want to watch Michael Jordan be involved in the next match, with his penchant for gambling large sums of money and his obsession with golf. However, all has been quiet on MJ’s end about whether he’d compete. Perhaps he’s remained tight-lipped because the schedule didn’t work for him before, though he might just not be interested.

In an ideal world, both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson would be involved in the next one, though with Tiger passing on the latest one, it’s unclear whether he has interest in doing it again. Woods and Romo vs Mickelson and Jordan would be a spectacular foursome, though that might very well be a pipe dream.

Justin Thomas Would Be An Excellent Addition

One golfer that is off the board but surely needs to be talked about would be Justin Thomas. He was a fantastic reporter for the second version of ‘The Match’ with his humor and dry wit. Not to mention, he’s shown in the past he can chirp and bring levity to the proceedings when he’s been mic’d up while playing with Tiger.

Following that tweet by Mickelson, perhaps that’s a clue that JT could be involved.  It would seem like it could be a match made in heaven for him to generate some more interest in the fourth match.

As much as it would be fantastic to have Michael Jordan involved, it perhaps doesn’t seem like that’s in the cards, leaving a foursome involving Justin Thomas and Peyton Manning vs Phil Mickelson and Tony Romo as the best realistic scenario.
