KBO Picks & Odds (June 28): Brooks Should Help Tigers To The Win

• There were two no-hit bids on Saturday that lasted into the seventh inning
• With Odisamer Despaigne struggling, we should see plenty of runs in the KT-Hanwha showdown
• Pitchers should quiet the batters in the KIA-Kiwoom contest – see below for odds and best bets

It was a wild day in the KBO League on Saturday as we had a pair of pitchers throwing no-hitters into the seventh inning with one of them being broken up in the ninth inning. Now that the lines are posted for Sunday’s games, what should we expected to see? Let’s take a closer look the games and make our daily three picks.

Over For Wiz, Eagles Showdown

The KT Wiz is going to trot out former Chicago White Sox hurler Odisamer Despaigne in this one against the last-place Hanwha Eagles. The two teams have split their first two games of this series with the Wiz getting the win on Saturday, thanks to a solid outing from William Cuevas.

Despaigne is going up against the worst offense in the league but he’s been shaky of late. He’s 1-3 in his last four starts and has walked seven batters in his last two. He seems to be fading and the Eagles should be able to do a bit of damage against him. Despaigne allowed just six earned runs in his first five outings; he’s allowed 24 in his last five.

Sure, part of that is a 10-run loss to Doosan but he hasn’t been crisp otherwise too. A bit issue for Despaigne has been home runs. He gave up none in his first five starts, but has given up five over his last five starts.

As for the Wiz, they’ll face Chad Bell here, who has a 7.67 ERA on the season through six starts. He’s been walking a ton of batters and getting knocked around. I expect the Wiz to get some runs off of him here and the game to go over.

Pick: Over 9.5 (-110)

Pitching Should Dominate KIA-Kiwoom Showdown

Pitching was the name of the game in Saturday’s matchup as Eric Jokisch had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning, as Kiwoom won 2-0. I’m expecting pitching to be the main storyline in this game too as we should get another under.

Aaron Brooks (3-3, 2.62 ERA) has been solid all season for the Tigers, but what’s even more relevant here is that he’s been stronger on the road than at home. He’s 2-0 in away games with a 1.40 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP compared to 1-2 at home with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

His counterpart, Choi Won-tae, is the weaker of the two starters, so you might want to go with Kiwoom on the side. However, Won-tae has been better at home (3.94 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) than on the road (4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP), so while he’s not great overall, he’s been more respectable at home.

Adding those up and that the offenses were quiet on Saturday, I’m looking at another low-scoring game in this one and another under.

Pick: Under 8.5 (-115)

Chan-gyu, LG Should Handle SK

We’re looking at a big line here as LG is expected to roll to victory here against SK. SK is just 14-32 and is second-last in the standings while LG is 26-20 and is fourth. Beyond that, the pitching matchup figures to tilt in LG’s favor quite a bit.

LG is trotting out Lim Chan-gyu, who has already faced SK twice this season and held them to just four runs in his two outings. He’s lasted at least six innings in each while posted a 12:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. I don’t think we’re going to see SK score much in this game.

On the other hand, we’ve got Kim Joo-han, who has a brutal 10.80 ERA with a jaw-dropping 2.60 WHIP this season. He’s a reliever who is going to start but the only saving grace here is that LG has some injuries in their batting lineup. If you don’t mind the juice, you can lay -170 with LG but I think we’re looking at an under here with one team doing most of the scoring.
