  • The Miami Marlins are -115 road favorites over the Washington Nationals in an afternoon battle of National League East rivals on Wednesday, September 15
  • It’s a battle of Rogers, as Trevor Rogers takes the mound for Miami to face Josh Rogers of Washington
  • The Nats beat the Marlins 8-2 on Tuesday, ending Miami’s three-game winning streak over Washington

Perhaps they should unfurl the Jolly Roger at Nationals Stadium on Tuesday as the Washington Nationals (60-85, 34-40 home) play host to the Miami Marlins (61-84, 23-50 away). The pitching mound will become Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, as Trevor Rogers toes the rubber for Miami, while Josh Rogers works the bump for Washington.

Okay, enough with the Rogers jokes. Roger. Over and out.

Oddsmakers are siding with the Miami side of this Rogers rivalry. The Marlins are slight -115 away favorites. Washington (-105) is also being offered at negative odds. Miami is just 3-8 as a road favorite this season.

His pitching line shows one victory since May 19 after opening the season 6-2. He’s showing a 116.9 maximum exit velocity, among the bottom 4% in the NL.

The left-hander has faced Washington twice already this season. He took a 3-1 loss on May 7. The other start saw him not figure in the decision on July 20 as the Nationals won 6-3.

He’s 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over those two starts. Those are also his only career appearances facing Washington. He’s checked the Nats on a .243 batting average, while striking out nine and walking six over nine innings of work.

Josh Rogers will be making his third start of the season and sixth of his MLB career. He started three games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2018. His MLB career record is 2-3. Josh Rogers’ 3.65 ERA for Washington is five runs better than the 8.65 he posted in eight career appearances with the Orioles.

He worked 5.2 innings in beating the New York Mets 4-3 during his Nats debut on September 4. During 12.1 innings of work, Josh Rogers has struck out six, walked four and surrendered two home runs.

Over 10 MLB appearances, he’s made five starts and pitched five relief stints. This will be the first time that Josh Rogers is facing the Marlins.

Marlins vs Nationals Pick

Tuesday’s 8-2 victory by Washington halted Miami’s three-game winning streak against the Nationals. The Marlins have won four of the last six games from the Nats.

Washington holds an 8-3 edge over Miami through the past 11 games at Nationals Park. The Nats scored more runs in Tuesday’s win than in their previous three games against Miami combined (six runs).

Not only are both pitchers named Rogers, both are also lefties. Miami’s Rogers, an NL All-Star Game selection this season, certainly deserves a better fate than a .500 record. In four of his losses and seven of his no-decisions, Trevor Rogers has surrendered two earned runs or fewer.

Miami is 2-7 in Trevor Rogers’ last nine starts. Washington’s Josh Rogers has surrendered 12 hits in 12.1 innings. Go with the more experienced Rogers.

Pick: Miami Marlins moneyline (-115)
