First pitch for this doubleheader opener on Tuesday, May 31, is set for 1:10 pm ET at Comerica Park. Cloudy skies, 13 mph wind and a temperature of 87 degrees are in the forecast.

Smeltzer Unbeaten Since 2019

Twins lefty Devin Smeltzer is 1-0 in three starts this year and his lone win came on the road. He got the victory in a 6-4 verdict at Kansas City on May 20.

Smeltzer has worked at least five innings in each of his three starts and has never allowed more than one earned run in any appearance. In fact, he’s 3-0 since the start of the 2020 season. Smeltzer hasn’t tasted defeat in a big-league game since losing to Cleveland on Aug. 9, 2019.

He’s situated in the top 3% of MLB pitchers in xERA (2.12), wOBA (.207), xwOBA (.247) and xwOBAcon (.251). Smeltzer is among the top 5% in xSLG (.306). However, the southpaw is among the bottom 5% in strikeout percentage (12.9), so you know when Smeltzer’s on the hill, the opposition is putting the ball in play.

Against the Tigers Smeltzer is 1-0 but with a 7.11 ERA. He got the win in a 10-4 Minnesota triumph on Sept. 22, 2019 at Comerica Park.

Unlike Smeltzer, Tigers right-hander Rony Garcia has never tasted defeat in the major leagues. He’s 1-0 through 26 career appearances. Tuesday will be just his fourth big-league starting assignment.

With 22 strikeouts against only five bases on balls, Garcia is showing a stellar 4.40 strikeouts/walks ratio. He rates among the top 8% of big-league hurlers in strikeout percentage (32.4). However, Garcia sits among the bottom 2% in hard-hit percentage (53.7) and in the bottom percentile in xwOBAcon (.499).

Garcia has faced the Twins four times, including one start. He’s never factored in the decision but shows an 8.10 ERA.

Twins vs Tigers Prediction

Five of Detroit’s nine regulars are batting below .200. That doesn’t lean toward continued success. So even though the Tigers have won two in a row and four of five. it’s difficult to side with them keeping it rolling.

Smeltzer has been lights out in all three starts since he was called up earlier this month. He’s coming off working seven shutout innings against the Royals.

Pick: Minnesota Twins ML (-145)
