Phoenix will go searching for its fifth straight win on Thursday (January 20th), when they visit Dallas.

Phoenix Suns Betting Analysis

Devin Booker was the catalyst for Phoenix’s latest victory, pouring in 48 points in a 121-107 win over San Antonio. It was the third straight 30+ point effort the Suns leading scorer, which helped earn him Western Conference Player of the Week honors.

Chris Paul added 15 points and 12 assists in the victory, helping the Suns improve to 17-4 away from home. They’ve won six consecutive road games, and have three more wins than any other team outside their own building. That’s a big reason why they’re a top-4 squad in the  2022 NBA Championship odds.

Bismack Biyombo didn’t start in the absence of star center Deandre Ayton, that honor belonged to Javale McGee, but it was Biyombo that was a true difference maker. The 29-year-old put up 17 points and grabbed 14 boards in just 25 minutes, helping neutralize the Spurs’ major rebounding advantage.

San Antonio entered play ranked second in the NBA in points in the paint, but thanks to Biyombo, Phoenix was actually the better team down low.

The Suns shot 51.6% from the field, while committing only five turnovers. Defensively, they held San Antonio to a 44.6% shooting percentage, and turned 12 Spurs turnovers into 23 points.

Injury wise, Ayton will miss his second straight game on Thursday due to an ankle injury he suffered in Saturday’s victory over Detroit.

Dallas Mavericks Betting Analysis

The Mavericks, meanwhile, entered play on Wednesday night on a nice little run of their own. Dallas had won six of seven ahead of its tilt with Toronto, thanks in large part to the brilliance of Luka Doncic.

The 22-year-old racked up his third triple-double in the last five games on Monday versus OKC, helping the Mavs squeak out a 104-102 victory. Dallas nearly blew a 22-point third quarter lead, but a key turnover in the final seconds helped preserve the W.

Doncic had one of his worst shooting performance of the season, missing 13 of his 17 field goal attempts, but still gutted his way to 20 points. He added 12 assists and 11 rebounds, helping him rack up his fifth triple-double of the season, and the 41st of his young career.

Just how good is Doncic? His 41 triple-doubles are now more than all 349 of the other players combined who have played for Dallas. He’s a top-10 candidate in the latest edition of the 2022 NBA MVP odds.

The Mavs’ current surge also includes victories over Memphis, Chicago, Golden State, and Denver, who are all playoff bound and own three of the five best winning percentages in the league.

On the injury front, Kristaps Porzingis is set to resume his full allotment of minutes, after missing seven games between last month and this month due to health and safety protocols.

Dallas’ second leading scorer has averaged 16 points in his first two games back in a reduced role, and will help ease the offensive burden from Doncic’s shoulders.

Suns vs Mavericks Pick

Phoenix brings the NBA’s fifth highest rated offense into play on Thursday, but as good as Booker and Co. have been, this game has a strong chance to underwhelm on the scoreboard.

That’s because Dallas is not only one of the top defensive teams in the NBA, ranking third in scoring defense, but also because they play at a snail’s pace. The Mavericks operate at the league’s second slowest pace, and average the second fewest possessions per outing. Not surprisingly, unders have dominated their contests this season hitting in five straight, and in 29 of 44 overall.

The Suns meanwhile are no defensive slouch, ranking second in defensive rating. The under has cashed in three of their past four outings, while the two teams have combined to average just 209.5 points this season in two meetings.

Pick: Under 212.5 (-110)
