Baylor Big Favorite

Baylor is the odds-on favorite after winning its first Big 12 regular-season title. The Bears have won three straight games since taking their lone loss of the season against Kansas.

Junior guard Jared Butler is rated the Big 12’s best player by KenPom.com and the fifth-best nationally. He is averaging 17.1 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.1 steals while shooting 49.3% from the field and 44.4% on three-pointers.

Senior guard MaCio Teague is second in scoring with a 15.8 average. Junior guard Davion Mitchell is a stat-sheet stuffer with averages of 13.8 points, 5.7 assists, 1.9 steals, and shooting percentages of 51.6 on field goals and 47.2 on threes.

The Bears are also strong on the boards. Senior wing Mark Vital is pulling down 6.3 rebounds a game and sophomore forward Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua is averaging 5.4.

Baylor is third in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to KenPom, scoring 125.3 points per 100 possessions.

The Challengers

Kansas has won back-to-back games and seven of its last eight during a late-season surge.

The Jayhawks do not have a star player. However, five players are scoring in double figures – junior guard Ochai Agbaji (13.7), junior forward David McCormack (13.4), freshman forward Jalen Wilson (12.2), senior guard Marcus Garrett (10.2), and sophomore guard Christian Braun (10.1).

Wilson leads the team with 8.2 rebounds a game, McCormack is averaging 6.1 and Braun has a 5.3 average. McCormack is accounting for 28.7% of Kansas’ possessions and 29.8% of its shots when he is on the floor.

Kansas is eight nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, allowing 88.6 points per 100 possessions.

Like Kansas, West Virginia has a balanced offense with four players scoring in double digits. However, the Mountaineers have lost two of their last three games.

Sophomore guard Miles McBride has averages of 15.4 points, 4.7 assists, and 1.8 steals. Junior forward Derek Culver is averaging nearly a double-double with 14.8 points and 9.8 rebounds while accounting for 29.3% of West Virginia’s possessions.

Senior guard Taz Sherman is scoring 13.4 points a game and junior guard Sean McNeil has an 11.9 average.

Even with star freshman guard Cade Cunningham sitting out with a sprained ankle, Oklahoma State surprised West Virginia 85-80 on Saturday on the road for its sixth win in seven games.

The Big 12 Player of the Year is expected back for the tournament. He has accounted for 28.6% of Oklahoma State’s possessions while averaging 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.

Sophomore guard Avery Anderson III has an 11.1 PPG scoring average. Sophomore forward Kalib Boone is shooting a sizzling 66.9% from the field while scoring 9.9 points a game.

Texas is on a three-game winning streak and led by junior guard Andrew Jones, who is scoring 14.9 points a game.

Junior guard Courtney Ramey is making 44.8% of his shots from long distance and averaging 13.6 points and 4.0 assists. Senior guard Matt Coleman III (12.4) and freshman forward Greg Brown (10.3) are the Longhorns’ other top scorers.

Don’t Sleep on Texas Tech

Two years removed from losing in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game in overtime to Virginia, Texas Tech is a good value play at such attractive odds.

While the Red Raiders lost 88-73 at Baylor on Sunday, they won their previous three games and have a dynamic scorer in Mac McClung. The junior guard is averaging 16.6 PPG.

Sophomore guard Terrance Shannon Jr. (12.5), junior guard Kyler Edwards (10.2), and sophomore guard Kevin McCullar (10.1) are also capable scorers averaging double figures.

Who Will Win?

It is understandable why Baylor is the overwhelming favorite after nearly getting through the regular season unscathed.

However, Kansas has played extremely well of late and is the only team to beat the Bears. Look for the Jayhawks to continue to roll and capture the tournament after finishing second in the regular season.
