Lille Within Touching Distance

With just six games left in this season’s Ligue 1, Lille now have the chance to open up a six-point lead at the top of the table. With second-placed PSG not playing until Sunday (vs St. Etienne), if Les Dogues can beat a useful Montpellier, who still harbor ambitions of European soccer next season, then they will heap the pressure on the Parisiens, who themselves have an upcoming Champions League semifinal with Manchester City.

Lille head into this game off the back of a free week but last Friday made light work of a tricky-looking away game in Metz. Goals from Burak Yilmaz and Zeki Celik and a penalty save from keeper Mike Maignan gave them a comfortable 2-0 win and maintained the pressure on PSG who responded the next day with a 4-1 away win at Strasbourg.

Huge Pressure for Les Dogues

Christophe Galtier’s men remain under huge pressure as they play the opening game of the weekend but the destination of the title is in their own hands, and if they can match PSG’s points haul over the last six games, they will win their first Ligue 1 title since 2010-11. This makes the game against Montpellier their biggest game of the season so far. With PSG away to 13th-placed St. Etienne, Les Dogues dare not slip up.

Lille’s run-in looks okay on paper, with games against Nice, Angers, and St. Etienne, but crucially they do still have to play fourth-placed Lyon and fifth-placed Lens and recently have struggled at home, winning just one of their last four league games at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. But, to put this in perspective, it is worth noting they have only conceded 10 goals at home all season.

Montpellier Full of Goals

Montpellier, while down in eighth, still have a chance of European soccer next season although realistically it is more likely to come by winning the French Cup – they face Canet Rousillon in the quarterfinal – than by closing the sizeable gap to fourth place. But they come into this game in good form, having not lost in 13 games in all competitions. Not since consecutive defeats by PSG and Lens at the end of January have they tasted defeat, so picking up points, home and away, has become a habit for La Paillade.

This never-say-die attitude was never more evident than last Saturday when Gaëtan Laborde’s 93rd-minute equalizer salvaged a point for Montpellier in their home game with Marseille; a draw that maintained the unbeaten run while doing little to close the gap between them and the top four.

Where Montpellier have succeeded this season is in front of goal, where their 52 goals scored is the fifth highest in the division – bettered only by Lille, PSG, Monaco and Lyon – but defensively it has been a struggle and they currently have a negative goal difference, having conceded 53. Michel Der Zakarian’s side has also struggled on the road and has won only once in their last eight – albeit it was a thrilling 2-1 win at Lyon – and it is worth remembering they were unlucky to lose 3-2 away to Lille just before Christmas.

Lille vs Montpellier Best Bets

Lille start as odds-on favorites for this game and has not lost to Montpellier at home since 2011 but this will be tricky. The pressure on Les Dogues is huge to deliver the win, especially with them knowing PSG is waiting for them to slip up, and so the draw should not be ignored, especially with Montpellier’s ability to score freely. Also worth considering is Over 3.5 goals at +250.

Pick: Lille and Montpellier to draw (+290) / Over 3.5 goals (+250)
