The 2020 French Open will be played after being postponed in May. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many safety precautions and regulations continue to be put in place in order to execute the tournament. Originally it looked as if there would be able to be fans in the stands, but officials have decided against it.
A few notable names, including 2019 champion Ashleigh Barty, have decided not to participate in this year’s tournament. But there is still an enormous amount of talent leading the quarters, which will make for an exciting tournament from start to finish.

Top seed Simona Halep leads the way in the first quarter. Not only the favorite to win her quarter, but she’s also the favorite to win the tournament. The 2018 champion is coming off a win in Rome, and is currently on a 14-match win streak, over the course of three tournaments. She enters the French Open on the back of two straight title wins on clay, including nine clay-court titles over the course of her career.

Halep starts her tournament with a match against Spain’s Sara Sorribes, and it’s possible she sees fifth seed, Kiki Bertens in the later rounds. This would most likely be her toughest match of the tournament up to that point.
Best Bet: Halep (+130)

Once again, in her quest for 24, Serena Williams will be competing in Paris at the French Open. She doesn’t have the easiest quarter in the tournament, with other possible contenders. Out of all the Grand Slams, the French Open has not favored Williams in comparison to the others. But you can’t forget that she does have three French Open titles and a total of 11 clay-court titles.
In their most recent meeting at the US Open, Azarenka ended up defeating Williams after going down the first set. It’s possible that the two will have a rematch of their semifinal match in the fourth round, which would be a defining moment of the tournament.
Best Bet: Azarenka (+333)

Despite an early exit at the US Open, Muguruza was able to redeem herself at the Italian Open last week, where she defeated the likes of Coco Gauff, Johanna Konta, and Victoria Azarenka. The 26-year old has had success on clay before, winning the Open in 2016. Her natural power is able to shine through on the heavy and slow play of clay.

11th seed Muguruza will start her tournament against Slovenia’s Tamara Zidanšek. This will be first the first time the players have faced each other. Muguruza will truly be tested in the later rounds, but she is the best best to come out of this quarter the winner.
Best Bet: Muguruza (+240)

Polona Hercog | +2500 |
Arantxa Rus | +2800 |
Julia Goerges | +2800 |
Laura Siegemund | +3300 |
Pliskova comes into the French Open as the second seed after making it to the finals of the Italian Open. She stopped playing after just 31-minutes due to injury. Look for her to be a contender this year, and to be the one to come out of this quarter. She was a semifinalist in 2017 and plays a decent game on clay. As long as injury doesn’t play into account, she should be the one to beat here.
Pliskova’s toughest match of the quarter could come with the possibility of playing 2018 finalist Sloane Stephens in the third round. The two have played each other a few times, with Stephens holding the edge. But it’s worth noting that Pliskova’s win against Stephens did come on clay.
Best Bet: Pliskova (+450)
