After back-to-back non-cut events, the PGA Tour resumes its full field schedule this week in the Caribbean. Golfers will arrive on the stunning island of Bermuda for the third installment of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, fresh off a win on the European Tour and a Ryder Cup appearance, headlines the field, while 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed will also tee it up. After those two, there’s a sizeable drop-off in talent as Christiaan Bezuidenhout is the only other top-50 player in the field.

Is It Mito’s Time?

Our first target is Mito Pereira, a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this year, who’s excelled since joining the big boys. Pereira has racked up three top-six finishes in his past six starts, and finished second at the Shriners in total strokes gained last time out.

Unfortunately an egregious short game performance prevented him from challenging for the lead, but it’s impossible to ignore the 9.6 strokes he gained with his ball striking.

Those who have kept close tabs on Pereira over the past few months can attest that few players in the world hit it as pure as he does when he’s on. He’s gained over 7 strokes ball striking in three straight starts, and in five of his past seven events overall.

He ranks first in the field in strokes gained approach over the past 24 rounds, seventh in fairways gained, and fourth in birdie or better percentage. That last stat is particularly important given that Port Royal Golf Course is not a challenging track, and this year’s event profiles as a birdie fest.

Recent breakout stars on Tour Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland each got their first PGA Tour win at weak field events, and Pereira is in great shape to follow in their footsteps.

2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Best Value Picks

  1. Seamus Power (+2000): Further down the odds board we find Seamus Power, who’s been on a tear since the spring. Power has posted three top-10 finishes to go along with a victory at the Barbasol, and is fresh off gaining 7.1 strokes with his ball striking at the Shriners. Over the past 24 rounds, he ranks fifth in this field in birdies or better gained, and 11th in strokes gained putting.
  2. Adam Hadwin (+3500): The Canadian is a boom or bust play, but his game was lights out in his last start. He racked up a sixth place finish at the Shriners gaining 5.7 strokes on approach and another 5.7 strokes with his short game. He typically excels at short tracks with Bermuda greens such as Port Royal Golf Course, with his lone Tour victory coming at the Valspar Championship in 2017.
  3. Brian Gay (+10000): Last but not least we find the defending champ, who tournament organizers might want to consider naming this event after. Gay has finished first and third here in two trips, gaining 27 strokes on the field during that stretch. His game hasn’t been razor sharp lately, but that was the case last year as well. He missed nine of 10 cuts prior to his start at Port Royal Golf Course in 2020, and still went on to take home the title.
