After two rounds of the Open Championship J.B. Holmes and Shane Lowry are on top of the leaderboard in Northern Ireland at 8-under par, one ahead of Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood.

While they both have won some strong tournaments on the big stage, neither have captured a major championship before so it’s far from a guarantee they’ll be out in front heading into Sunday. Who presents the best value to take the 3rd round lead?

Brooks Koepka Best Positioned for Third Round Lead

Despite being three shots back of the leaders, how can you not fully invest in Brooks Koepka at this point? If you’d have been wagering on him the last few years he definitely would’ve helped you far more than he’d hurt you.

He’s just three strokes back and that’s with playing very average by his standards, not making many putts and playing to the field average in fairways and greens hit. In the first three majors this year, his third round scores were 69 (Masters), 70 (PGA) and 68 (US Open), so continue to expect him to shoot under par Saturday and steal the lead.

Lee Westwood a Sneaky Good Betting Option for Third Round Leader

Stop if you’ve heard this one before – Lee Westwood is in contention to win that elusive major championship. After suffering a career full of major heartbreaks, he’s just one stroke back and at +800 presents solid value. His ball striking has been exceptional, hitting 77% of his greens this week and his characteristic inconsistent putting hasn’t reared its ugly head thus far.

Of course, whether he’ll finally get over the finish line is another story, but for the purposes of this bet, we’re looking for a 3rd round leader and he’s been in the mix many times over his career, including 54 hole leads at the 2010 Masters & 2013 Open Championship.

Best Live 3rd Round Leader Value Picks at 2019 Open Championship

  1. Justin Rose (+600): Just two strokes back, Rose seemingly is in contention at most majors, with a third at last month’s US Open and T-2nd at last year’s Open Championship. Hasn’t been on his ‘A’ game yet is just two back. Due for a classic great ball striking round.
  2. J.B. Holmes (+700): 36-hole Co-leader has been on top of the board all week, grabbing the solo first round lead and backing it up Friday. Hitting tons of fairways (85%), and greens (80%) which bodes well for difficult third day.
  3. Jordan Spieth (+1600): Held the outright lead after 54 holes in 2017 en route to victory and was a co-leader after three rounds last year at this event. Just three shots back with tons to prove to the naysayers.
