  • Sportsbooks have established the American League as the favorite to win the 2019 MLB All-Star Game
  • The AL has won the last six All-Star Games
  • The total has gone under eight runs in eight of the last 13 MLB All-Star Games

When it comes to the MLB All-Star Game, the American League is on a roll. The junior circuit has won the last six Midsummer Classics. That includes an 8-6 victory last year at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

Oddsmakers see this trend continuing to develop. They have established the AL as the -109 chalk to win Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game.

2019 MLB All-Star Game Odds

League Moneyline Run Line Total Odds
National League -101 +1.5 (-199) O 8.5 (-121)
American League -109 -1.5 (+174) U 8.5 (-101)

The NL last won the game in 2012, taking an 8-0 victory at Kansas City’s Kaufman Stadium.

Making The American League Great Again

Not only has the AL won the past six All-Star Games, they’ve gone 24-6-1 in the game since 1997. While they’ve been a solid moneyline wager in the past six games, the AL has also provided a steady return on the run line play.

You’ll be required to give 1.5 runs if you take the AL in the run line wager, meaning they’d need to win the game by two runs in order for you to also cash in a winner. But over the past six games, the junior circuit has won by an average of two runs per game.

Just once in that six-game span has the AL failed to cover a -1.5 run line.

Pick: American League run line -1.5 (+174)

They’re Going Streaking

The MLB All-Star Game was born in 1933 at the behest of Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward. He felt such an event would be both a good fundraiser and a deft distraction from the woes impacting America due to the Great Depression.

The first Midsummer Classic was held July 6th, 1933 at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. The AL won 4-2 and The Bambino, New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, clouted the first All-Star Game home run.

The AL won the first three games, four of the first five and 12 of the first 16 contests from the NL, establishing a pattern of winning streaks that’s continued throughout the history of the event.

The AL took seven straight MLB All-Star Games from 2003-09.

A win in this year’s game and the AL will match its best run of success in the All-Star Game. The AL took seven straight MLB All-Star Games from 2003-09. They also posted a winning streak of six games from 1988-93 and captured five in a row from 1997-2001.

The NL has also enjoyed times of prosperity during the game’s history. The senior circuit owns the two longest winning streaks in MLB All-Star Game history – 11 games between 1972-82 and an eight-game run from 1963-70.

Overall, the AL holds a slight 44-43 edge in all-star game history, with two games ending in ties.

Pick: American League (-109)

MLB All-Star Game Goes Totally Under

When you think all-star game, you think high-scoring. Certainly that’s been the case in the NHL and NBA All-Star Games. Even the NFL alters its rule book for the Pro Bowl to put governors on what the defense can do to stop the offense.

In the MLB All-Star Game, it’s proven to be exactly the opposite. Defense wins the day. Low-scoring affairs are the most commonplace outcome.

Books have set the total on this year’s game at 8.5 runs. In eight of the past 13 games, the total has added up to seven runs or less.

In 52 of 89 MLB All-Star Games, the total runs scored has been eight or less. The final combined score has come out to fewer than 8.5 runs in nine of the last 11 midsummer classics.

Pick: Under 8.5 runs (-101)
