Pitchers on a Short Leash

Although Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale exceeded 3.5 strikeouts in seven of nine regular-season starts, Boston is keeping a tight rein on his postseason appearances. He hasn’t worked more than 2.2 innings in either start, mainly because he’s showing a postseason ERA of 14.73.

Sale struck out two batters in each of those starts. Although he’s traditionally a solid strikeout pitcher, go with the trend and play the under.

When Astros lefty Framber Valdez started Game 1 of this ALCS against Sale, both pitchers were done after 2.2 innings pitched. Valdez also struck out two in that game.

He lasted 4.1 innings in his other postseason start against the Chicago White Sox. Valdez is displaying a 7.71 postseason ERA, so he also figures to be on a very short leash in this game. He struck out six against the ChiSox.

He’s fanned more than 4.5 batters in four of six career postseason appearances. Valdez also topped that number in both regular-season outings against Boston.

Pick: Chris Sale under 3.5 strikeouts (+110); Framber Valdez over 4.5 strikeouts (+110)

Setting Sale Against Chris

Needing a win so that they don’t head back to Houston’s Minute Maid Park staring elimination in the face, it must be a relaxing feeling for the Red Sox to be sending a veteran former Cy Young Award winner like Sale to the bump. However, the postseason has not traditionally been smooth sailing for Sale.

He’s 1-2 with a 6.91 ERA. covering nine playoff appearances, including six starts. Things get even worse when the Astros are added to the equation. Both of Sale’s career postseason losses came against the Astros. He’s started four times against Houston during postseason play, and the Red Sox are 0-4 in those games.

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve is batting .333 (8-for-24) against Sale with a home run and three RBI. First baseman Yuli Gurriel is hitting .375 (3-for-8) off of the BoSox southpaw. He’s driven in two runs. Gurriel singled off Sale in Game 1 of this set.

Boston second baseman Rafael Devers (2-for-7, .286) and centerfielder Enrique Hernandez (3-for-11, .273, homer, RBI) have hit Valdez well, and that continued in Game 1 of the ALCS. Devers knocked a pair of singles. Hernandez crushed a solo homer.

Picks: Yuli Gurriel +0.5 hits (-250); Rafael Devers +0.5 hits (-220); Enrique Hernandez +0.5 home runs (+550)
