OAK vs LAA Probable Pitchers: Mason Miller (0-0, 4.15 ERA) vs Griffin Canning (0-0, 3.48 ERA)

Just about everything is looking dreary in Oakland right now but one of the few bright spots has to be rookie right-hander Mason Miller. An impressive big-league debut last time out turned many heads.

Although he didn’t go past the fifth inning, there’s no doubt Miller made an impact in his first pro assignment. Facing the Cubs, the 2021 third-round draft pick relied mainly on his upper-90s heat to notch five strikeouts while yielding a pair of runs.

Clearly, Miller looks like someone on the rise, especially considering he needed only 11 games (10 starts) of minor-league experience to get here. Prior to his arrival in the majors last week, Miller appeared in two games, spanning 8.1 innings, and garnered a whopping 19 Ks. That’s special!

While the Halos present a potent offense — specifically the likes of Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Hunter Renfroe and Anthony Rendon — Miller’s freshness combined with his quality stuff can be enough to keep them off balance. That could go a long way in a total as high as 9.

Canning’s Comeback Off to Strong Start

As for the other starter, Griffin Canning, this is someone that’s become forgotten thanks largely to injuries that sidelined him the last year and a half. But that only increases the opportunities to find soft spots involving the 26-year-old righty.

Canning is out to a fine start on his comeback trail thus far, tallying a couple of outings in which he pitched the A’s into the sixth and limited the opposition to just two runs. Not only that, he’s throwing harder than he was previously, registering a fastball velocity average of 94 mph.

I was a believer in Canning early in his career and I’m buying into the former second-round draft pick continuing his ascension. Canning also enjoyed a strong spring training (1.32 ERA, .220 opponent batting average) and that helps lead me to the thought he’s confident right now.

Helping matters will be a date with the Athletics. This is unquestionably one of the weaker lineups in baseball; they’re currently one of eight clubs generating fewer than four runs per game.

Athletics vs Angels Over/Under Pick

Only a gander is needed to realize this is a great buy-low spot in terms of the total. These are no doubt two starting pitchers who will be treated better by the linesmakers as the campaign strolls on.

Pick: UNDER 9 (-105)
