The Toronto Blue Jays have to be one of the biggest disappointments in MLB so far this season. This was a team with serious championship aspirations, but entering play on Thursday, they sit third in the AL East, seven games back of first.

Things won’t get any easier for Toronto this weekend, as they begin a four-game road set with the Los Angels Angles. LA is off to an impressive 27-17 start to the season, and oddsmakers are expecting their strong stretch of baseball to continue.

The Angels entered play on Wednesday night riding a three-game winning streak, and LA opened as -150 moneyline favorites against the Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 9:35pm ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA, with clear skies and 59 degree night time temperatures in the forecast.

Toronto vs Los Angeles Pitchers

The Angels will give the ball to dual position superstar Shohei Ohtani on Thursday. Ohtani, the reigning AL MVP and top-five contender in the Cy Young odds, has posted five consecutive impressive outings, allowing two runs or less in each start. He’s racked up 39 strikeouts during that stretch while yielding only two home runs.

He’s 1-0 in one career start against Toronto, and has held the Blue Jays current roster to a .136 batting average over 47 at-bats.

Ryu vs Ohtani

1-0 Record 3-2
6.00 ERA 2.82
1.33 WHIP 1.02

3.7 SO/W Ratio 5.9

Toronto will counter with Hyun Jin Ryu, who’s fresh off back-to-back strong starts. Since coming off an injured list stint due to forearm inflammation, he’s allowed just one run over 10.2 innings, posting a 6-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio along the way.

Ryu hasn’t pitched against the Angels since the 2019 season and Michael Lorenzen is the only LA batter who’s actually faced Ryu in the past.

Blue Jays vs Angels Betting Analysis

Not only will Toronto have to deal with Ohtani on the mound, but he’ll also lead the charge at the dish. The favorite in the AL MVP odds headlines a potent Angels lineup that also includes former MVP Mike Trout, and ranks top-two in baseball in home runs, slugging and OPS. LA averages the fifth most runs per game (4.82) and owns a .779 OPS over the past week.

The Blue Jays lineup on the other hand, is a different story. Toronto’s once mighty bats rank 12th in the American League in runs per game, and are hitting just .209 in 23 games in May, while crossing the plate only three times per outing.

Eight of Toronto’s nine regulars have seen a decline in OPS this season compared to last, with Teoscar Hernandez down 401 points, and Matt Chapman and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. down 243 and 227 points respectively.

Blue Jays vs Angels Pick

It’s hard to put a lot of faith in Toronto right now. It’s even harder with a juggernaut Angels lineup and Shoehi Ohtani on the mound on the other side.

Toronto has been dismal away from home this season, posting a 9-12 record and a slugging percentage that is 46 points lower and an OPS that is 72 points lower than at Rogers Center.

LA meanwhile, entered play Wednesday night with 15 home victories already this season (tied for second in MLB) and have won by at least two runs in each of its last eight victories.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels -1.5 (+135)
