Valdez Mows ‘Em Down At Home

Framber Valdez pitched the Astros into the World Series. Now he’s being given the chance to start the World Series for Houston.

Based on his home numbers, you’ll be wanting to go with Valdez as well. His strikeout total is set at 4.5. In the ALCS series clincher against the Boston Red Sox, the Houston southpaw struck out seven batters.

That game was at Minute Maid Park and there’s something about the Astros’ home field that turns Valdez into a strikeout pitcher. He’s fanned at least five hitters in 17 of 24 appearances this season. That’s 70.8%. At home, he’s struck out at least five in 10 of 13 games. That’s 76.9%.

Braves right-hander Charlie Morton, a former Astro, is also on a 4.5-strikeout total. From June 17 through the end of August, he went over that total in each of his 14 starts. Through his six September-October starts, he only hit the over on a 4.5 total three times.

In three postseason starts, though., he’s 3-0 on the over.

Picks: Framber Valdez over 4.5 strikeouts (+120); Charlie Morton over 4.5 strikeouts (-125)

Brantley A Driving Force

Not many of the Astros have enjoyed much in the way of success when Morton is the pitcher dealing to them. Catcher Yordan Alvarez is a .500 hitter when facing Morton but it’s a small sample size (1-for-2).

Outfielder Michael Brantley is batting just .200 (3-for-15) off of Morton. However, he’s driven in four runs from those 15 at-bats.

No Braves hitters have ever faced Valdez, so it’s left to check out their work this postseason against lefties. First baseman Freddie Freeman has clouted three playoff homers. Two came off southpaws. He’s also batting .357 (5-for-14) when facing left-handers.

Third baseman Austin Riley is 4-for-9 (.444) when stepping into the batter’s box against a left-hander during the playoffs.

Picks: Michael Brantley over 0.5 RBI (+200); Freddie Freeman over 0.5 home runs (+550); Austin Riley over 0.5 hits (-220)
