A pair of playoff bound clubs clash Thursday afternoon (September 2nd), as the Milwaukee Brewers visit the San Francisco Giants. Milwaukee enters play with a massive lead in the NL Central, while San Francisco is in a dogfight with the LA Dodgers for top spot in the West.

This will be the series finale of a four-game set, with the Giants set to welcome the Dodgers into town starting Friday.

Milwaukee Brewers +135 +1.5 (-150) O 8 (-115)
San Francisco Giants -155 -1.5 (+130) U 8 (-105)

San Francisco opened up as a -155 favorite, in a game that features a total of 8. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 pm ET at Oracle Park in San Fran, with sunshine and 67 degree temperatures in the forecast.

The Giants and Brewers boast the second and third lowest ERA’s in the Majors respectively, and Thursday’s pitching matchup certainly reflects that.

Probable Pitchers

Logan Webb will toe the rubber for San Francisco, looking to improve to 6-0 at home. The 24-year-old has been lights out at Oracle Park all season, posting a 1.71 ERA, while yielding a minuscule .211 opponent batting average.

He’s surrendered two runs or less in 13 straight starts dating back to early May, with four of those outings being shutout performances. Last time out, he blanked the NL East leading Atlanta Braves over 7 innings, scattering five hits, while striking out 6.

Lauer vs Webb

Eric Lauer
VS
Logan Webb
4-5 Record 8-3
3.61 ERA 2.65
1.28 WHIP 1.11
.236 OBA .228
2.6 SO/W Ratio 2.9

His 2.91 xFIP ranks fourth in all of baseball, and he completely silenced the Brewer bats in their only meeting. Back on August 6th, Webb held Milwaukee’s top-10 offense to one run and three hits over 6 innings, in a no decision.

Milwaukee will counter with Eric Lauer, who’s in the midst of his best stretch of the season. The southpaw has surrendered two runs or less in seven of his past eight starts, however he hasn’t been pitching too deep into games.

Lauer has made it out of the 5th inning only once in his past four outings, and tends to rack up a high pitch count quickly. Last time out, he threw 102 pitches in just 4.2 innings against Minnesota, surrendering two runs, while striking out six.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Brewers Batters Batting Average vs Webb Giants Batters Batting Average vs Lauer
Willy Adames .333 Brandon Belt .091
Jackie Bradley Jr. 1.000 Kris Bryant .250
Lorenzo Cain .000 Curt Casali .333
Avisail Garcia .500 Brandon Crawford .231
Omar Narvaez .000 Thairo Estrada .000
Rowdy Tellez .500 Wilmer Flores .364
Luis Urias .000 Buster Posey .357
Kolten Wong .200 Austin Slater .500

His advance stats pale in comparison to Webb, but it’s still worth noting that he’s posted the lowest xFIP, and hard hit rate of his four-year career.

Lauer hasn’t faced the Giants since 2019, when he made four appearances against them, but he did post a 3-0 record against San Fran that year, despite allowing nine runs in 19.1 innings of work.

Brewers vs Giants Pick

At this point, how can you bet against Webb? He’s one of the hottest pitchers in baseball and would be a legit Cy Young candidate if an injury hadn’t cost him the entire month of June.

The matchup versus the Brewers is one of the toughest he’ll face all season, but it’s also a matchup he just dominated last month. In addition to his dominant start versus Milwaukee, he’s also neutralized some of the league’s most dangerous lineups over his incredible 13 start stretch.

He held the Dodgers, the NL’s highest scoring team, to four earned runs total over three starts, shutout Cincinnati (a top-6 offense), and held Houston, MLB’s second highest scoring club, to two runs.

At this point he truly appears matchup proof, especially at home where’s been virtually unhittable. His offense meanwhile, can certainly do enough damage against Lauer, and should he leave early, the Milwaukee bullpen as well.

The Giants rank fourth in the NL in runs scored, and no team in baseball has hit more home runs.

Pick: San Francisco Giants Moneyline (-155)
