The Philadelphia Phillies will be aiming to continue their steady play on home turf in the early going of the season, when they continue a three-game weekend series with the visiting St. Louis Cardinals as narrow -104 underdogs. The Phillies opened the series with a decisive 9-2 win on Friday night to improve their home record to an NL East-best 6-1.

The Cardinals hope to rebound as they prepare for a 4:05pm ET first pitch at Citizens Bank Park as -112 favorites. With Friday’s loss, St. Louis has now dropped five of six, and dipping their record to 6-7 on the campaign.

The long wait for the Phillies’ bats to come alive finally ended on Friday night, as they romped to a lopsided victory in Friday’s series opener. The win is welcome considering the club’s disappointing performance over this past week’s six-game road trip.

Philadelphia was limited to one or fewer runs on three occasions while dropping five of six. However, steady play on home turf has kept the Phillies in striking distance of the NL East-leading New York Mets, whom they now trail by just a half-game in the divisional standings.

Moore Searches for First Win in Three Years

The Phillies have dominated St. Louis in recent meetings. With Friday’s victory, Philadelphia has now taken five of seven from the Cardinals since the start of the 2019 MLB campaign, and also six of eight at Citizens Bank Park. The club has steadily contained the Cardinals offense during their recent steady stretch, limiting St. Louis hitters to just 2.5 runs per game over their past six clashes.

That’s good news for veteran southpaw Matt Moore, who is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday searching for his first win since 2018. The 31-year-old signed with Philadelphia after spending last season in Japan, but has struggled in his two starts to date this season. Moore has allowed 13 hits and seven earned runs over 8.1 total innings of work, and has yet to earn a decision. However, he has been steady in previous appearances against the Cardinals, going 1-0 in two career starts, and giving up just four earned runs over 13.0 total innings.

Opposing Hitters Beating Up on Cards

Friday’s loss is a harsh blow for the Cardinals, who now sport a sub-.500 record for the first time since the opening weekend of the season. The club has been rocked hard by opposing sluggers during their current 1-5 run, allowing 6.8 runs per game, while mustering two or fewer runs on four occasions during that stretch.

The Cardinals’ power outage continued in the series opener. The club was limited to just two hits through the first five innings, and six on the evening, with Tommy Edman once again representing one of the bright spots. The St. Louis third baseman produced two of the club’s six hits on Friday, to extend his current hit streak to 11 games, including four multi-hit outings.

Kim Makes His Return

St. Louis also hopes to get a lift from the return of Kwang-Hyun Kim, who is set to make his first start of the season in Saturday’s contest. The 32-year-old Korean turned heads in his major league debut last season, compiling a 3-0 record in seven starts to go along with a sparkling 1.97 ERA. However, he saw his start to the current campaign delayed by a back injury.

The Cardinals will be counting on a strong start from Kim, which would give their bullpen a break after seeing starters go no more than 5.0 innings in each of their past six contests. However, St. Louis’ continued struggles at the plate make the Phillies a solid bet on home turf.
