The Miami Marlins (64-91, 24-53 away) visit the New York Mets (73-82, 44-33 home) on Tuesday for the series opener of a four-game set at Citi Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM EST. It will be two quality arms on the mound in Trevor Rogers and Marcus Stroman.

Miami has the slight edge in the season series, going 8-7 against NY, and also won the last two games earlier this month.

Probable Pitchers

Rogers has undoubtedly been the ace of this Marlins rotation this season, posting an impressive 2.67 ERA. While his 7-8 record is a testament to the lack of run support he’s received, the lefty has struck out 151 hitters in just 128 innings of work while walking 44.

Since Rogers returned to Miami at the start of this month after a short absence due to personal reasons, he’s given up only eight earned runs in four outings. In his latest start, the 23-year-old tossed 5.1 innings while allowing four runs, but only one was earned. He also racked up 10 K’s against the Nationals.

The 2021 All-Star, who is in just his second season at the MLB level, has faced the Mets once this year and dominated, going six scoreless frames while surrendering a mere three hits and striking out 10. His ERA lowers to 2.60 on the road and also sits at 2.51 in day games. That being said, all signs point to another quality start here for Rogers.

Rogers vs Stroman

Trevor Rogers

Marcus Stroman
7-8 Record 9-13
2.67 ERA 3.00
128 Innings Pitched 174
151 SO 154
44 BB 40

Stroman has also been relatively consistent for the Mets, but he isn’t receiving much help from their lackluster offense. In 32 starts, the right-hander is 9-13 with a 3.00 ERA. He’s struck out 154 in 174 innings and allowed just 40 free passes.

However, Stroman has posted a 4.03 ERA in September and is coming off a rough outing against the Red Sox, allowing four earned runs and two homers at Fenway across 5.1 innings. New York is out of playoff contention at this point, but Stroman will be looking to finish the year on a high note here.

He’s already faced the Marlins three times this season, compiling a 2.13 ERA. They’ve had a tough time scoring runs off him. In fact, their current lineup is batting only .117 against Stroman. He also has a terrific 2.96 ERA at Citi Field, which is a huge reason for optimism heading into Tuesday’s outing.

Although the Marlins are not even close to a playoff spot, they will be looking to get back on track here to conclude the campaign. They’ve lost five straight heading into Tuesday and just got swept by the Tampa Bay Rays. It was a very tough series for Miami from an offensive standpoint especially, scoring only five runs across three games.

Producing at the plate has been a huge problem for them all season long, scoring 3.9 runs per night, which is 27th in the Majors. The Marlins are also hitting .234 as a team and that ranks 25th.

For a team that had such promise heading into 2021, the Mets have been a big disappointment. They’ve also lost five consecutive contests and have an atrocious 1-9 record in their last 10 games. While injuries are definitely a huge reason New York has struggled, their bats have simply not been consistent enough. The Red Sox and Brewers swept them with ease. The Mets drove in just six runs in the Milwaukee series, which was a three-game set. Hopefully, NY can give Stroman some offensive support here.

Marlins vs Mets Prediction

With two solid arms on the hill, this is definitely a tough one to call. Both guys have ERA’s of around four in September as well. However, the Marlins have one of the worst road records in the big leagues, while the Mets are well over .500 at Citi field. Take New York.

Pick: New York Mets moneyline -170
