After romping through the National League playoffs last season – going 9-2 on their way to a World Series berth – the Philadelphia Phillies (91-72, 50-32 home) picked up right where they left off in their first playoff game of 2023. Philly breezed by the Miami Marlins (84-78, 38-44 away) yesterday by a 4-1 score thanks in large part to another exceptional postseason start from ace Zack Wheeler.

With first pitch at Citizens Bank Park slated for 8:08 pm ET, oddsmakers are once again favoring the Phillies in Game 2.

The Game 2 odds have only been open for roughly 12 hours, but the MLB public betting trends nonetheless show a stark landscape for the visitors. As of 11:00 am ET on Wednesday morning, a staggering 97% of moneyline handle was on Philadelphia to close out the series.

If the Phillies do win on Wednesday, they will advance to face the top-seeded Atlanta Braves in the ALDS portion of the MLB playoff bracket.

PHI vs MIA Starting Pitchers for Game 2

After the Marlins were held to one run on five hits over 6.2 innings by Zack Wheeler yesterday, Tuesday’s MLB lineups don’t provide much reprieve with the Phillies giving the ball to Aaron Nola. The Marlins counter with 26-year-old Braxton Garrett, who will be making his first postseason appearance.

Braxton Garrett vs Aaron Nola

Garrett
VS
Nola
9-7 Record 12-9
3.66 ERA 4.46
4.51 xERA 3.74
1.15 WHIP 1.15
23.7% K% 25.5%

Garrett had better surface-level numbers than Nola in the regular season (3.66 ERA vs 4.46 ERA) but their peripherals paint a much different picture. Their expected ERAs are basically flipped (4.51 vs 3.74).

Nola also has a much better track record against the lineup he’ll be facing on Wednesday. With Miami and Philadelphia both in the NL East, there is ample history between all involved. In 158 total at-bats, the Marlins are slashing .234/.267/.437 against the veteran Nola with seven home runs and nine doubles.

The Phillies, on the other hand, have absolutely mashed against Garrett. In 68 total at-bats, Philly hitters are slashing .353/.389/.647 with four homers and six doubles. They have as many RBI against Garrett as strikeouts (13). In Tuesday’s MLB player props, some sportsbooks have Garrett’s over/under for outs recorded at just 13.5, which requires just 4.2 innings pitched to hit the over.

Marlins vs Phillies Game 2 Prediction

The way this Philadelphia lineup has teed off on Garrett in the past, expect Game 1 to look similar to Game 2 at the outset. The Phillies had opened up a 3-0 lead by the end of five innings are were never seriously threatened. Miami, the worst road team to make the playoffs, managed just five hits off of starter Wheeler and didn’t get their first extra-base hit or get on the scoreboard until the seventh inning.

Nola has never quite developed into the dominant ace many projected when he  recorded a career-best 2.37 ERA back in 2018, but his track record against this light-hitting Miami lineup provides enough confidence to back the Phillies in the first half of the ballgame.

Marlins vs Phillies Game 2 Picks:

  • Phillies first 5 innings -0.5 (-115) at Caesars Sportsbook
  • Garrett under 14.5 outs recorded (-128) at FanDuel Sportsbook
