A very important series between the San Diego Padres (74-66, 30-35 away) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (89-53, 47-23) continues on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM EST at Dodger Stadium.
There will be two quality arms on the hill, with Blake Snell getting the start for San Diego, while LA hands the ball to Max Scherzer, who has been absolutely lights out lately.

Probable Pitchers
It’s been a rough year for Snell, who has a dismal 4.22 ERA and 7-6 record in 26 starts. While the southpaw has struck out 170 hitters across 128 innings, his command has been very shaky, allowing 68 free passes. That’s been one of the main reasons he’s struggled to have success. But, Snell is pitching a lot better over the last month. In August alone, the 28-year-old posted a 1.72 ERA in six starts, with opposing lineups batting only .151. It was by far his best stretch of the season yet and he followed it up with a quality outing to begin September, tossing seven frames of two-run baseball against the Angels while racking up 11 K’s.
The longest perfect game bid in Padres history is 7.2 IP by Chris Young in 2008.

Snell’s control is improving, too. The most walks he’s surrendered in a single start since the beginning of last month have been two. Another positive heading into Sunday is that Snell has pitched extremely well against the Dodgers in 2021, compiling a sharp 1.96 ERA in four appearances. The Padres desperately need another good start from the lefty as they aim to nab a Wild Card spot.
Snell vs Scherzer
7-6 | Record | 13-4 |
4.22 | ERA | 2.28 |
128 | Innings Pitched | 154 |
170 | SO | 210 |
68 | BB | 33 |
The Dodgers wouldn’t want anyone else on the mound other than Scherzer considering how well he’s been pitching. The 37-year-old hasn’t given up a run in his last three starts combined and has also walked only one hitter. In the process, the three-time Cy Young winner has struck out a whopping 32 batters. While his 13-4 record and 2.28 ERA on the season is undoubtedly impressive, the veteran righty has been practically untouchable in LA.

In seven starts for the team since coming over at the trade deadline from the Nationals, Scherzer boasts a 1.05 ERA in seven outings. He’s definitely a favorite to win another Cy Young at this point as well. However, the Padres are a team who has hit Scherzer well in 2021. In three appearances against them, he’s compiled a 5.40 ERA. They’ve been able to score some runs off him this season, but as a whole, their lineup has a career .173 average vs. Scherzer.

The Padres continue to fight for a Wild Card spot, but they’re struggling to win ballgames. San Diego is just 5-5 in their last 10 ahead of Saturday’s contest. Things don’t get any easier following this Dodgers series either, with the Giants, Cardinals, San Fran again, then Atlanta all up next. The Padres were also just hit with another injury blow, with infielder Jake Cronenworth leaving Friday’s game with a fractured finger.
Jake Cronenworth has a small fracture on his left ring finger, Jayce Tingler says. Not clear on the length of his absence.

A Wild Card spot is a guarantee for the Dodgers right now as they sit 14 games ahead of the Padres and Reds, but their ultimate goal is the NL West title. LA is 2.5 games behind the Giants as of Saturday. Unfortunately, Dave Roberts’ team doesn’t play them again this season and with San Fran red hot, the Dodgers need to keep winning if the division crown is going to be a possibility.

Padres vs Dodgers Prediction
Although Snell hasn’t thrown the ball well against the Dodgers, Scherzer has been practically unhittable for LA. I honestly don’t see the Padres coming out victorious for that reason alone. Take the Dodgers to cover the runline here, with their ace getting it done once again.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (+105)
