It’s hard to get amped up for a Pirates (52-88, 24-45 away) and Reds (56-83, 29-40 home) matchup in April, let alone September. It’s even harder to get excited for two games between the NL Central bottom-feeders in one day.

Fortunately, though, we can bet on these games. With Game 1 of their doubleheader on Tuesday being one of only two contests running before 6:00 pm ET, the matchup is going to draw plenty of interest at online sportsbooks.

Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

The Reds will give the ball to Luis Cessa. The 30-year-old has spent the majority of the season in a bullpen role, but has looked sharp in back-to-back starts. Last time out he held the Cubs to three hits and two runs over 5.2 innings, while the start prior he yielded only two runs to the Rockies in 5 innings of work.

The big thing working against him is his control. Cessa currently boasts a 1.31 WHIP and .266 opponent batting average. Enemy hitters are making hard contact at a 44.1% clip, which is well above his career mark, and well above the league average. That’s led to an xERA of 4.71, which is his worst mark over the last four seasons.

Oviedo vs Cessa Stats

Johan Oviedo
VS
Luis Cessa
2-2 Record 3-2
3.90 ERA 4.97
1.47 WHIP 1.33
.227 OBA .266
2.8 SO/W Ratio 2.4

Pittsburgh will counter with Johan Oviedo, who like Cessa has spent the majority of his season as a reliever. Oviedo was recently acquired from the Cardinals and his tenure with the Pirates is off to a rocky start.

He’s allowed four runs over 4.2 innings, walking three more batters (8) than he’s struck out (5). Control has been an issue over the course of his career, as he averages over one free pass every two innings.

Oviedo has been able to bail himself out of trouble by stranding runners at an 81.2% clip this season. That number is abnormally high and he’s due for some negative regression. If he continues to walk batters at the rate he currently is, he won’t last very long.

Pirates vs Reds Betting Trends

These two teams may have putrid records, but when they square off offensive fireworks usually follow. They combined for nine runs in Monday’s series opener, and have reached at least that number in eight of their 13 meetings.

Cincinnati is averaging over five runs per contest versus Pittsburgh this season, while their .723 OPS versus Pirates pitching is their fifth-best mark against any team in a minimum of seven matchups.

Losses have been piling up for the Reds, but it’s worth noting that seven of their past nine outings have produced at least nine runs.

Pittsburgh on the other hand is simply a bad offense, there’s no way around it. They rank bottom three in baseball in runs per game, slugging and OPS. They are, however, trending up.

The Pirates scored six times in Monday’s series opener, and are slashing .276/.329/.452 over the last week, which is a roughly a 20% improvement on their season-long stats.

Pirates vs Reds Pick

In other words, we can play the over confidently in this matchup. Neither starter instills fear in the opposition, while both teams’ bullpens rank in the bottom-four in ERA.

Four of Pittsburgh’s last five outings have either met or exceeded the total, while each of the Pirates’ last three meetings versus Cincy have gone over.

The Reds meanwhile, have been an over darling all season. Just four teams in MLB have seen a higher percentage of their games clear the total than Cincy, and interestingly they’re all from the National League (Braves, Mets, Phillies, Brewers).

Pick: Over 9.5 (+102)
